I've been reading alot about Android and Hero today and I came across software written by HTC called "HTC Sync". HTC Sync will sync with you local copy of Outlook. What it will sync with Outlook I don't know.

I didn't look closely at HTC Sync because I have a hosted Exchange Server (Sherweb) and I was trying to find out how the HTC implimentation of Exchange handles creating new Tasks and syncing Tasks.

that's a mighty fine question and i haven't the foggiest idea of how to answer it. as far as i know most phones that will sync with outlook that aren't windows usually only do calendar, contacts, and email but wouldn't sync notes, tasks, whatever etc. i hope it would but we won't know til the 11th

In the PDF link posted by MrChainsaw above, the Hero will sync calendar, contacts, and email. Doesn't specifically mention anything else, so I'm going by what is listed by sprint.

If the Hero does not sync Tasks, I will not get it - this is a deal breaker for me!

Google has a tasks function on their calendar. I know you can sync your outlook calendar with your google calendar. I have never messed with outlook tasks, so I don't know how they work, but you could probably import your tasks to the google tasks, which could easily sync with the hero.
