Gmail contacts deleted - very angry

When I first bought my hero, I didn't know better. I put in my gmail information, as you have to in the beginning, and it synced with gmail, copying all of my contacts from within gmail to my phone. I didn't want those on my phone because they arent structured properly and it adds too many junky contacts to my phone. I deleted the gmail ones from my phone. It synced with gmail and erased them there too. Lesson learned... don't sync contacts. I had to reset my phone and upon doing so, the first thing I did was remove the tick from "sync contacts". Somehow it still did. So I verified that I had unchecked the contact box and deleted the gmail contacts from my phone. Two days later, all gmail contacts are gone. My phone says that it synced them 20 minutes ago even though there is no check in the box to sync those. WTF IS GOING ON? This is really starting to piss me off.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I don't want any syncing of my contacts! What is on my phone, I want on my phone. What is in my email, I want in my email! This syncing and deleting is BS.

No offense but why dont you just go into your gmail account on a computer, go to contacts and clean them up. Its much simpler that way, not to mention if you have multiples of the same contact, you can merge them together into one.

As for stopping the contact sync, there may be an option in gmail that you can select to stop the sync.

None taken. Simply, because there are too many. If I email someone about a craigs list ad, that lakdfhlasdjk@craigslist address is added to my contacts. Continually going through and deleting those is a PITA. I could also get a spam address for that stuff, but why should I have to change how I do things to accommodate the phone?

P.S. - I did do a search. Thank you for posting the link though.

Ok blazinazn, I looked through the instructions in your link. Some of the instructions are a little off for the hero, but still, I dont want to sync anything! I just want my phone to stop trying to sync contacts and simply unchecking sync contacts is not doing it.

I ran into the exact same problem. I am on the hunt for a good contacts replacement just to make it a bit easier for me.

Re: Gmail contacts deleted - very angry

I went into gmail and labeled all the contacts I want on my phone 'Peeps' sorry wasn't very creative that day. Then as described in the link above, I set the hero to only sync Peeps. I almost deleted everything using some backup program but caught it just in time.

Sync is VERY handy but could also destroy everything with a blink of the eye. I strongly recommend in gmail every once in awhile exporting your contacts to a .csv file and saving that file in google docs or somewhere safe in case all hell breaks loose.

Thats a really good idea. Once I rebuild my contacts, AGAIN, I'll make sure to do that.

I noticed your sig calling hero a pain in your ass. Why dont you take it back and swap for something else, or go back to your Touch Pro. What is the sense in using a phone you dont like?

I realize that but hope you would get the gist of it from my post in the Droid thread. You should be able to go into contacts on your phone and choose not to sync anything. I can on the moment, not 100% sure you can do that on the Hero. I figured it would be pretty similar since both were released with 1.5

Hope that helps

That was updated today. I like the phone, I just dont like the things it does. When you have to set your contacts up again and again, thats a pain in the ass. Anyone who says otherwise, doesn't have very many contacts. When you select the DO NOT SYNC CONTACTS option, you kind of expect that that is what you will get. I like the phone, I think it has a lot of potential, but issues like that are enough to turn people away. I'm not getting another phone because I have no interest in blackberry phones and this one is less buggy than my WM phones.

I did not get the gist. Your thread was tailored around importing and exporting contacts for outlook purposes on another phone. I understand what you were getting at now, but none of the instructions followed up for me. If you click menu in contacts you get the option to sync exchange or outlook contacts. You dont get the option of changing them there. In the settings, from the home screen, the only option you get is that of unchecking "contacts". Thanks for your help anyway.

I guess another reason that I'm reluctant to give it up is because it is the only phone I have ever paid for. Every other windows phone has eventually crapped out enough that I was able to get a new one. I was so excited to get this one because I thought I wouldn't have to deal with all the usual WM stuff like locking up, missing texts, running extremely slow, becoming unresponsive...
