What does the release of the 2.1 HTC Kernal mean for me?

ok guys/gals....so I have been debating rooting and using Fresh 1.1 and was possibly going to do it over lunch today at work, however, i have a question:

With HTC releasing the kernal for 2.1 for the Hero today, what does this mean for me (the unrooted Hero user looking forward to 2.1)?

Is it any indication as to the update being released soon? I know the 99.9% answer to that is "it's up to Sprint to release it" and the 100% answer to that question is "your guess is as good as mine", but historically speaking, when the kernal for a build is released, what timeframe usually exists between kernal release and upgrade release? I guess the bigger question is, what exactly is a "kernal"?

I know most everyone is going to say "root, once 2.1 is released, the cooks will have the rooted version available shortly after" or "root, and if it does come out, you can always flash back the stock RUU and upgrade OTA then", but the think is, I dont' want to root and then with my luck, 2.1 gets released next week

Just looking for some insight/best guesses.

Also, while on rooting, I actually brought a separate microSD card to make the Nandroid backup on. Is this a good/bad idea? Is the best way to do this to make a copy of the SD card on the PC, do the root and flash with a clean card) and then copy everything back to the card? I have an 8 GB card that is nearly full. Don't know how much space is required on the card to root/flash.

First off, the release of the kernel is for developers. It doesnt mean anything to you until someone releases a rom. In regards to a 2.1 release, there is no specific time for the release after the kernel is released

Root now. Atleast while you are waiting for 2.1 you can have some fun. If 2.1 is going to require additional rooting, you are gonna have to wait anyway.

About the extra SD card. Do you have a computer? Just copy the nandroid folder from your SD card to your computer. A second SD card with the nandroid isnt necessary.

Just make sure there is atleast 120 mb on your card before you flash. Rooting isnt going to add anything to your memory card and the recovery image is like 3.2 mb.

The only thing your confusing is, the kernel released IS NOT the 2.1 kernel. 2.1 is not a kernel anyway, it's just a software number. What they released was the 2.6.27 kernel, which is the kernel that 1.5 uses. The kernel that will be used for 2.1 doesn't have to be released until AFTER 2.1 is released, which sprint has said first half 2010, which means anytime from january 1 to june 30. What the release of this kernel is allowing is for the dev's to tweak the current 1.5 build and to allow them to hopefully build a full working 2.1 DEV rom. They've built a 2.1 dev rom from the leaked source of another phone, but can't get everything to work, the camera is the last thing i recall not working, but with the kernel source, they SHOULD be able to make a full working 2.1 dev rom. If you want to root, go ahead, if you want to wait, go ahead, that's up to you. you can root 1.5, or theres a few 2.1 almost fully working dev roms out there, or you can wait until sprint releases, that's really your choice. It you don't have any experience rooting, just root 1.5 and get a feel for what's going on before you jump up to the 2.1 dev rom. but's that's just my opinion.

Oh and something I read over at xda, is apparently the power management htc uses is closed source and not part of the source code, so they're not sure if they can make the phone sleep like it should.

HTC's power management might be closed source and isn't included. This means that even though the screen turns off and it reports that it's sleeping it might drain quicker than normal.

from what i've seen of the dev's work so far, i'm sure they'll figure out something.
