How to tell if phone is connecting with b or g speeds in wifi

I have the speedtest.net app installed on the phone, and have wifi turned on. Mobile network is turned off. Router is a g capable router. The phone results are about 2.6 mb/s download, and 650 k upload. Testing a pc on the same test results in speeds of 8.5 download, and 1.5 upload. The test was done with the phone and the computer in the same room, same distance from the wireless router. This makes me think the phone is connecting via b speeds, and not g. I thought the hero was capable of wireless g speeds over wifi? While my results are still faster than what I usually get on Sprint, I'm not complaining too much, but wanted to see if you folks noticed the same thing, or not.

Edit: I'm running the stock sprint 1.56 rom, non-rooted

Re: How to tell if phone is connecting with b or g speeds in wifi

i think this will raise more questions than it answers but....
i also have reason to believe its only running on 802.11b because i ran a speed test on the Hero using speedtest.net's app and it only clocked at 3583kpbs using a linksys wireless g router
from the same location relative to the router my Archos 5 IMT w/ Android which is 802.11b/g/n and it clocked at 9246kbps using the same speed test app
then, using speedtest.net direct web page my laptop (from the same location) clocked 14.42Mbps (14420kbps to stay consistent)
same router, same spot, same Comcast, 3 results, weird....
but I'm pretty sure I saw the Hero's speed needle hit 4400kbps which is almost the cap for 802.11b of 5000kbps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11#802.11b
odd, very odd

This is an easy one guys......go into your router and switch the broadcast from mixed to b or g only and test away.

makes sense
but if my laptop and archos are running g just fine, and the hero is g capable, why isn't it just connecting through g in the first place?

Good question. I remember with the TP BigD found a way to make it work through the registry, it wasn't even enabled by default.

i don't really care b/c i never use wifi on my hero anyway but it does irritate me that they are claiming g out of the box but then its not, apparently on the TP as well, that's just bothersome. I think it'd be one thing if they advertised b and then we found a way into g anyway but to put g on the box then give us b is just dumb (yes that was filtered)

Very true. You mean you put G-Only and it was faster?

I don't know why the Hero would default to b, but if you place your router in g only then it would force your Hero to use g to connect and you would never have to think about it again.....until you connect to another WiFi......

looks like b speeds to me, but then again what type of connection do you have and where does it usually run on a computer

yeah another network, that's part of what irks me, but oh well like i said, i don't really use my hero's wifi anyway, and if i do have a wifi id rather use my archos anyway since apparently it can do 9.3 Mbps without breaking a sweat, thanks HTC!
