Turned phone off...restarted and icon disappeared once IM's disabled... thanks.

Now I'll teach you! When you log into your Yahoo IM, the yellow face appears on the top of your task bar. When you get a message, another pop up will appear on your top task bar IF you are not in your IM program, but are still logged in. You can also go into your Yahoo IM and LOG OUT, that will make the yellow smiley go away! If you need help taking your battery out of your device, let me know, and I will try to walk you through that as well.
