sounds like it didn't root correctly, so square one?

He *may* actually be rooted just fine, in spite of this error. I have some input and thoughts on this (and did some searching and reading last night), as I also cannot use 'adb remount' although I *am* rooted, recovery loaded, no other problems that I have found.

I am running on a rooted stock as I gather jbearamus likely is, not a cooked ROM, and I wonder if this might be the reason only a few of us get 'operation not permitted' with that command.

Question, jbear, if you run 'adb shell' from the tools folder, and then 'su' do you get an additional prompt or an error? If you get the additional prompt, you have likely rooted just fine.

From what I have read the ability to use 'adb remount' requires a 'rooted kernel' as it is a 'protected command' (see a reference here) -- I assume 'rooted kernel' is *not* the same as a 'rooted phone'? It seems that almost anyone with a rooted phone *can* use 'adb remount' so I have wondered if maybe all the cooked ROMs have a kernel that somehow fits the bill, while a few of us, possibly those few with rooted stock, have one that doesn't.

I can still 'adb shell' and then 'su' for root access anytime, but I get the same error when trying 'adb remount' as jbearamus and have to use the longer command inside the shell to remount the /system if needed.

Any thoughts?

Re: Market Apps, Experiences, & Pics *Updated 12/29/09*

Yes I am running on a stock rom and according to unlockr's instructions it was rooted although I started to doubt myself however, the adb shell and su instructions are accepted so I take it that means it is rooted but the adb remount command is not working so,
I don't know much on the subject so its not like my opinion matters that much but something of a protected kernel makes sense, but if all of the custom roms are based on that same kernal (assuming they are) shouldn't they have the same problem?

I didn't have this problem on stock. Have you tried using Flashrec method? You can also try Flipz auto root method. What are you trying to do? If you use Flipz kitchen you can remove apps easily. I wouldn't worry too much about it, try going a different route.

i have a couple of other methods i'm looking into (including just asking the developer for the apk) but i haven't heard of anything you just mentioned and all i'm trying to do is remove an apk thats on my hero from Android Market so I can install the same program on my Archos 5

Oh, I see. I may have misread, but did you try using Astro and its application manager to get it? All you have to do is back it up and get it from the backup folder.

Your welcome I didn't mention the back up folder because I don't back anything up.

Ok, first you need to sell your windows mobile device. Then buy a device that supports Android. Since you are in the Hero forum I would suggest that. When you get it, get onto the market and download it.
