New TyTN owner

Hey - just found this place and think its great.

I'm new to pocket PC world but learning fast about its limitations and problems both software wise and hardware wise. i'd be happy to contribute my finds...

I come from a Sony P910i background and had a P800 before that too.

So far...I'm missing alot of the phone features and ease of use functionality of the P910i - especially the volume on the ear piece and clarity of the speaker... but alas...on the upside, the Pocket PC has way more software and expandability.

So... thats my 5 cents worth. I've also been talking to the programmer of CCDialer which is the only "working" country calling card program for the pocket PC. He's been great to add a few features in for me - so on his next release i'll post a link.

Cheers.

Welcome!

"limitations and problems.." not sure where to go with that one. Are you coming from Palm OS? Once you get used to the PPC platform, and find the software that suits YOU, you will be calling Palm OS "limited, ancient, unstable..."

Read these forums with great detail, especially the "ppc software" forum. You will find TONS of software to check out. Off the top I strongly suggest:

Set up a push mail account. Mail2web has them free, or for 2.00 a month they will give you the option to reply to your emails with ANY email address you have. It also keeps track of your phonebook, calendar, tasks, and notes. All over the air (OTA), and super fast!

Weatherpanel and Phonealarm get a lot of attention. I personally don't care for phonealarm, but most others do. You will figure out your preferences along the way. Weatherpanel is great, but requires some effort, so I suggest getting to know the phone first. You will fall in love, and I can't wait to read all about it here

hello and welcome to PPC and your first PPC device.
U will find that it is a bit daunting to start with changing from any phone brand to another but as patmannyc has already said, once u are used to ur ppc and have it setup exactly as u like there is no turning back! And if u ever change ur device ull find that any ppc with WM5 is the same to use. Welcome to the big ocean! Where shall u swim??

I too came from a Symbian operating system, I had a P800 then a P910 followed by a couple of Series 60 Nokia's then a standard phone (W900) but I work in a phone shop so always got to play, I wanted WiFi and a decent route to browse the web on the go so I got myself a Vario (Wizzard) I hd it 6 months and I was hooked! I got a Vario II well early and here I still am! Can't wait to see what the new incarnation will be but I've got this for another 14 months yet and I intend to squeeze every last drop of usability and fun I can find from it. I have found loads along the way and will be starting a thread soon with all the things I've found work well on the TyTN.

Have a browse cos this is an awesome community, we're all here to help, post any findings u like and we will all learn together.

Enjoy ur new phone! Shall speak soon

Everybody now "Welcome SINC!!"

PS I posted this from my TyTN

hey!

Hello everyone and thanks for such a warm welcome - i'm sorry i've been away from this forum for a while... but here are my thoughts about my phone - using it now a couple of weeks down the line...

I had LOTS of issues and hard resets....initially... problems with alarms not going off and other such niggling issues. I now have it stable and I found most applications that I wanted/needed as a work around for the lack of phone feature support in WM5...only problem is that running this many applications chews up battery and seems to slow the beast down...but that apps i found have propelled me forward and in turn has made my experiences with this phone much richer. So now, I've got things working much better as a phone.. i'm so much happier with my purchase. Again I thank Kris for his wonderful calling card program (i posted the link below).

Funny thing though..... i said i wanted to purchase a PDA that is a phone... but have found myself using it alot as a games machine (whoops) didn't see that coming. I'm enjoying playing Quest on PPC, as i was a HUGE fan of Legacy on the P910i. I'm slowely discovering its the PPC's riches and i am enjoying it more than i first did by over 200%. thankyou so much for your support and welcome.. I'm converted... now, if i can get SMS threading going... i'll be the happiest Australian/Canadian camper, this side of the US.

Cheers and thanks again.

SINC
