Question Getting Started

Hey guys, 1st Post.
I found ppcgeeks from the youtube tutorial and I have a few questions about the HTC EVO that I'm not sure the forum guide touched on.

1st off I am interested in trying out different Roms. And the 1st issue i noticed is the tutorial doesn't touch on the HBOOT-2.10.0001.
I currently have my Evo rooted from revoked, and I'm very impressed how simple it was. Also I am not sure which file to download from Index of /shipped/Supersonic/ but I am assuming the latest file.

My end goal is to have a backup image of my phone in its current state I can keep on my pc. From which I can figure out how to tryout different Roms.
I hear there is a significant battery improvement with a few of them. And that the default kernel from sprint is vastly insuperior.

Thanks
- Jason

Re: Getting Started

Just use UnRevoke at unrevoked

That will get you rooted with the Signed Checker off. Then check back in for further instructions - grasshopper

Re: Getting Started

Currently I have the phone rooted from unrevoked
I found instructions on the forums leading up to hboot 2.02
my system appears to be a later version. I am a bit nervous to attempt anything with out matching versions

SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.10.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.11.19
Oct 15 2010,12:07:00

Also I understand that I need to backup my 4g keys. But I'm not sure the order of which i need to do this.

Re: Getting Started

When you used "unrevoked" to root your EVO, ot automatically flashes a custom recovery by Clockwork Mod. Use the recovery to make a "nandroid" backup. I'm not sure if Clockwork recovery will do WiMax backups but "RA Recovery" does. Just remember than you can't flash wimax backups from one EVO to a different EVO. The keys are device specific.

I would recommend flashing the RA Recovery now that you are rooted and your H-Boot is now s-off. Look for the flashable zip for RA Recovery and flash it like you do any rom and then you will have the ability to do more wipe functions as well as backup WiMax. There is a thread for Ra Recovery just look for it.

If you want a clean stock rom for a backup, you can do a nandroid now but personally I don't bother with the stock rooted rom for a backup because if or when i need to return to stock I just run the shipped rom ruu to return my phone to stock unrooted in order to take it in for repair or exchange. But you also have to flash the unrevoked "s-on" tool before running the shipped rom ruu because the shipped rom ruu removes your custom recovery and you then can't flash custom zip files unless you reroot. So always flash the "s-on" zip tool by unrevoked first before flashing the stock shipped ruu via your pc.

There are many good custom roms here at PPCGeeks and many good roms over at xda as well. As for which is "best" is all up to each individual and his or her personal taste. They are all good in their own rights. Most rom chefs offer support in ther rom threads in case you don't find an answer for a specific issue you might have with the rom you flash.
Welcome and have fun.

Re: Getting Started

Thank you for your response!
A friend of mine recommended I should use RA over Clockwork.
I found this site with many RA versions and im not sure which one i should use.
- Index of /amon_ra/supersonic/
I downloaded
- recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3-PC36IMG.zip 2011-Feb-09 22:52:11 3.4M

The next step would be copy it to my SD and boot into the hboot screen as mentioned on the guide?

Re: Getting Started

Yes, RA is what's happening. CW is still having some troubles. Flash RA and do a full Nandroid backup. Once you have that, you are in pretty safe territory.

As far as a custom Rom, why not start out with something pretty tame and familiar. Sprint Lover's All In One is a good starting point. Azreal 4.0 is another. After you get your feet wet, you will be flashing more that Michael Jackson in a schoolyard.
