Not as easy as some, but it gets the job done and it's got a wizard to walk you through.

There are free and paid versions available, I haven't had a problem with the free version.
I believe the free version won't let you go to secure websites, like banking, etc.

That's what they claim. While tethered into linux, I've checked my bank account balance and firefox was giving me full security notification.

This is what you need to know, hardware version, hboot version, and software version number. You can find 2 of these in the phone menu/settings and the other you'll have to enter the bootloader to find.

First, go to menu/settings /about phone and select hardware info, at the top will be hardware version.

Second, hit the back key, and then select software info, on the 5th line it will have the software number.

Next power down your phone by holding the power button and selecting power off. Then when phone shuts down, while continuing to hold the volume down button press the power button, the phone will enter the bootloader and on the second line will say HBOOT with a number, this number is very important for which root method.

If your software version is 3.29### or lower and you don't have HBOOT 2.02 you can use unrevoked at unrevoked. This is one of the easiest methods to root.

If you have software version 3.30.651.# or HBOOT 2.02 unrevoked will not work and you will have to use this method: [ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02 S-OFF - Like a Boss Edition! - Updated 11/20/10 - xda-developers
Thanks much. We did pick up the phones and they are 3.30.651.# and HBOOT 2.02. I read through the attached link and guide, very much appreciated. A bit more complex than I thought it would be to root the phone! Sounds like it's a bit of an uncertain science, as well. So kind of scared of bricking the phone! I'm used to WM smartphones and doing registry edits/hacks, so I was hoping this would be similiar. This is my first Google OS, so lots of learning to do, it seems.

What is the advantage of rooting it, besides to get a free app to do what I want here? If it costs me $20 to buy a program that will work for my needs, it seems that may be the safer way to go. But if there are a bunch of other things I "get" from un-rooting, I may give it a try.

Yes you can gain access to many apps when rooted(and it is not like Windows Mobile, there are tons and tons available (recommend searching market for something like APKTOR and doing a google search for repositories) you may find that this in itself may be worth rooting.

Also, rooted you can remove any bloatware or other files that could not be done for most part in WM , especially without doing long edits. When rooted you can use app like root explorer to remove unwanted apps or other things that you dont want there whereas you could not do with WM .

The backup restoring and recovery system when rooted can be totally invaluable and save you from many times losing everything and without having to do an elaborately long refash and reload with WM.

And yes, the free wifi tethering and tethering in 4g , another reason in itself to root.

The first time you root your phone may take you a hour or so depending on how quick you work and follow steps , but its well worth it . It makes it easy to flash new roms , radios, wimax, to your phone . I say take a few hours on a slow day , follow all the steps( it should not be hit or miss if you have a good stock referenced point and follow instructions based on what you have currently on your phone) Usually someone misses a simple step in the process . Good luck and hope you go rooted.

OK, that question makes a little more sense to be than before. I have PAM on my account leftover from an old plan. I think this allows me to use the wireless tether for free.

Does the free wireless tether allow you to talk on the phone while thethered like the Sprint App?

Re: "Free" tethering internet connection-sprint

the only thing with using PDANET that i worry about is if sprint will find out and then charge you. lets say you download 40 to 50 gigs like i usually use each month on my home connection just by myself as i stream movies, play online games, and re-install windows on a daily basis. I think windows should also be reinstalled on an hourly basis but.... So could sprint say something. I had a co worker who was using pdanet on WM6.x and he used like 20 ot 30 gigs a few years ago and sprint called and asked why his usage was high. He told them he was watching videos and all. They never asked if he was using pdanet or something similar.

Thanks for the details. Sounds like it's going to be worth doing. I'm already frustrated by some of the limitations the stock version of the OS causes me. I'll sit down and get through it soon.

Is there any other threads for directions on doing it with 2.02 and 3.30.651.x than this one?

Not that that one is bad or anything. Just wondering.

For 2.02 and 3.30.651, that is the only one I know of.

I'm sorry, but if that is your usual usage than you need true broadband and not mobile internet use, and yes if I was Sprint I would charge you extra for internet because that is abuse.
