I'm used to WM smartphones and doing registry edits/hacks, so I was hoping this would be similiar. This is my first Google OS, so lots of learning to do, it seems.

What is the advantage of rooting it, besides to get a free app to do what I want here? If it costs me $20 to buy a program that will work for my needs, it seems that may be the safer way to go. But if there are a bunch of other things I "get" from un-rooting, I may give it a try.
Yes you can gain access to many apps when rooted(and it is not like Windows Mobile, there are tons and tons available (recommend searching market for something like APKTOR and doing a google search for repositories) you may find that this in itself may be worth rooting.

Also, rooted you can remove any bloatware or other files that could not be done for most part in WM , especially without doing long edits. When rooted you can use app like root explorer to remove unwanted apps or other things that you dont want there whereas you could not do with WM .

The backup restoring and recovery system when rooted can be totally invaluable and save you from many times losing everything and without having to do an elaborately long refash and reload with WM.

And yes, the free wifi tethering and tethering in 4g , another reason in itself to root.

The first time you root your phone may take you a hour or so depending on how quick you work and follow steps , but its well worth it . It makes it easy to flash new roms , radios, wimax, to your phone . I say take a few hours on a slow day , follow all the steps( it should not be hit or miss if you have a good stock referenced point and follow instructions based on what you have currently on your phone) Usually someone misses a simple step in the process . Good luck and hope you go rooted.
