Re: 2.2 May Not Come Till December

"If you think about it by the time WP7 arrives most people will be locked in to 2 year contracts. They wont be able to buy new devices. "

Uh, most people are locked into 2 year contracts almost all the time. Doesn't stop some from buying new phones.

As for the Evo, there's no reason to rush the 2.2 out. It's in HTC and Sprint's interest to hold out as long as possible. It's not about dev effort and priority despite what they say: It's purely a business decision. As long as Evo is selling well (it has and it will for a while), they are not going to release 2.2.

My money is 2.2 upgrade won't be deployed for Evo at all in spite of what Hesse and Lin said. They will spin it later and back paddle.

Enthusiasts will yell bloody murder for 2 minutes then install non-official 2.2 ROM or move on to another 2.2/3.0 device. Average Joe Evo owner will live ignorantly happy with 2.1 until their contract ends.

Sprint/HTC isn't unaware of this.

You know you make a good point. They could just let the Evo sell out like it is now and once all the excitement dies down BAM! release the 2.2 update that breathes new life into the device and its sales. Seems viable.

But still what would be the point? By the time you let the excitement die down, there will already be more excitement over newer devices running gingerbread. So to continue to build that momentum they should release froyo as soon as possible because by the end of the year most of won't give a damn about the evo anyway since we will be waiting for the next best thing running gingerbread.

Well I wasn't thinking wait till December, thats just stupid. I was thinking more September timeframe. Unfortunately for us though thats probably when they actually will release it, not to restore excitement over the device but because they are just slow.
Its all good though, average user won't care and for the small percentage of us that do care there will be a completed port soon enough, everyone is happy.

UH ya most people on this site get new devices before the 2 years. I get a new device every year because of being a Premier Customer I am not the majority of sprint users. Also Sprint does or should want to get 2.2 out because other phones are going to have it and don't want people buying say a Galaxy because it has 2.2.

Why would Sprint care if people buy a Galaxy? They are getting the Galaxy along with every other carrier, and theirs will have 4G.

true sprint would not care as a sold device is a sold device.. now htc on the other hand may care a great deal and may well make sure that this update is pushed through so as to not lose customers to another manufacturer

All I'm saying is sprint needs to keep up with the other carriers thats all. If I can get a device with 2.1 or go across the street and get a device with 2.2 or 3.0 I'm gonna do it. I want the latest. I don't want to sit around and hope for an update.

OK so the Galaxy wasn't a good example (I know every carrier is getting it) maybe the Incredible would have been better. Sprint doesn't want to loose out because the Incredible has 2.2 and the EVO is only 2.1. It does make a difference look at WM 6.1 and 6.5.

Then why is Sprint/HTC taking their sweet time to release 2.2? Lin from HTC stated,"I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas."?

I Would believe? We would be? Nice way to not commit and dissuade people like you from moving on to Galaxy S or other 2.2 phones.

Highly functional ROMs can be cooked up in days/weeks by individuals. May be HTC/Sprint should hire some of these guys if they really do need months to get 2.2 out (roll eyes.) Evo will be old news in 6 months, not just as an Android phone but as a phone in general.

I'm not so sure its Sprint that takes its sweet time as much as HTC.
