You can do the easy/not really rooted way using unrevoked if you want full root (steps 1 and 2) then it will take a lot more.

I highly suggest doing as much as you can to get familiar with the process before rooting then. You're going through a process that if done wrong will brick your phone.

I've only done the simple unrevoked root for now. I did help my friend root her Nexus One but that's a different process.

If you want to root just for programs such as wifi tether unrevoked will do the job and it's super easy to put on and remove.

If you need to install roms then you will have to do a full root. I could have sworn someone over at xda made a batch file that did the full root for you.

It might also help if you tell us what part is confusing you.
