The problem with this argument is that (at least in my opinion), both sides are right lol.
No, you shouldn't have to switch plans or pay extra fees just to use a different phone. Half the reason why I haven't renewed my contract with Sprint (despite ironically already having been out of contract for over 2 years now) is that I'd have to switch to a more expensive plan (that doesn't offer much more, if anything at all, than my current plan) just to get a newer phone. From a consumer POV, it doesn't make sense to make people switch sides just to use a different phone, especially if they paid full price for the phone.
Yes, Sprint can pretty much do whatever they want. From a business POV, you can make a lot more money by forcing people to switch from older, cheaper plans, to newer more expensive plans that cost little to nothing extra on your end.
