Re: Try this screen test with your EVO and report back

these explanations are insightful and maybe the root cause. No, its not often i use the phone one handed. but alot of times at dinner/lunch you are perusing the web and it does not register a "swipe" but rather a "dotted line" this will be picked up as a unintentional tap. its frustrating when this happens when it does.

The explanations above also don't explain why i've only read HTC devices affected and not all htc devices. My friend has a iphone, my brother has a droid, and another friend has several nokia and a ipad. THEY don't have this problem on any surface.

i'm sure i won't die or lose a kidney by grounding my evo each time i use it by using 2 hands. but why only some of us are affected?

Re: Try this screen test with your EVO and report back

I think Aukutsutsu may well have hit the nail on the head when he said it's heavily dependent on environment, which would explain why not everyone is seeing it. Also, I think the reason only certain HTC devices have shown the issue is due to the digitizer being used in these phones, versus other phones and brands, may just be more susceptible to this type of issue.

As an example - I work in tech support for a major computer company. All of our laptops use capacitive touch pads and I have had cases were someone will call in complaining that their touch pad intermittently stops responding, even after replacing the touch pad. I even had one where their touch pad would not work at all in certain areas of their house. It's just something they had to learn to deal with and that may be the case with the type of digitizer being used in our case.

Weird thing is that sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't. What I also noticed is that it works good when the phone is charging.

The non-conductive surfaces you speak of (especially beds with sheets, styrofoam and plastic) are all capable of maintaining an electrical charge. When the phone is placed on this surface, the phone will also pick up this charge in the plastic case/glass screen. This excess charge will affect the capacitive screen because capacitive screens rely on electrical charge to work. When you pick up the phone, you are grounding the case (because skin is conductive) and removing the excess charge built up on the case/screen of the phone, and the screen will function normally.

Edit: Sorry forgot to say this is why only some people experience the issue and others not. The problem is COMPLETELY dependent upon the environment (surface charges, etc.)
OK, I think I know the answer to this. Everyone has a different moisture level and salinity level on the surface of their fingers. This means conductivity varies depending on these factors. I had a buddy in high school who's fingers were so "non conductive" he would grab hold of bare 120 V ac wires plugged in to house outlets to check if they were live. Didn't bother him a bit. It would send me through the ceiling! Just sayin' maybe it's not your phone??????

Re: Try this screen test with your EVO and report back

I also questioned about my own salinity level, or fatness of my fingers ;p but i tried this the other day with my friends hero, no problems. I let him try my evo. it has the same problem no matter who I let use the phone on a non conductive surface.

Re: Try this screen test with your EVO and report back

i have not experienced the issues that you are complaining about myself. if i was in your shoes I'd exchange it out for a new one to see if i had the same problem.

Re: Try this screen test with your EVO and report back

teddat,
Try moving your finger slower. If you are swyping really fast then you may not be applying enough force as it would then move the phone but when your holding it with the other hand you can apply more force as you are holding it and a faster swype does then work. Hope this is all it is and you don't have a bad handset.

Re: Try this screen test with your EVO and report back

This thread is irrelevant now. Newest update solved my screen sensitivity issue. I can use the phone on ANY surface and it will register touch perfectly. thanks to all that commented and brought this attention to HTC and sprint.

there's some other minor bugs.. but i'll leave that to other threads.
