What have you done? Full root? If you did then you should be able to boot into recovery without a PC. I've posted about figuring out if your rooted today, a few posts back.
If your wireless tether doesnt work you may be rooted but on the original stock ROM without a SU icon. Is that it?

Re: EVO - Root|Recovery|Nand Backup|Flashing for n00b's Instructions & Videos

Ok, rooted to toast the first steps and now on to the second part of bypassing NAND. I get to the part to bring up shell, run the command of evo-recovery..... and the window wont stay open. It opens for a split second and then disappears. Im not much for running shell so I have no idea to get the window to stay up so I can finish the second half of the root process. Thx

once the nand is unlocked, is this permanent, or will I be able to flash back to factory settings? I seem to have one of those phones with the screen issue and do not want to get screwed when I try to exchange it.

A couple of things could be the cause:
Are you trying to open the widnow without the phone connected? The phone has to be at the red triangle screen and plugged in before trying to open the window.
If you're doing that then are you running as an Admin? I've seen some say run as Admin and some say dont. Whatever you are doing do the opposite
Edit:Forget-"Red triangle" sorry was thinking of the original root, but your phone does need to be connected for the window to stay open.

Yes it's reversible. There's a going back to stock thread linked in my sig. If this post doesnt have my sig scroll around a bit, I'm kinda on here a lot
