4G vs. WiFi

Uh........somebody PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, but with 4G eating up the battery of the EVO...and 4G not being available in about 95% of America...why would I be worried about 4G right now......especially when you can't use 4G to make calls like you can on 3G? I mean, wouldn't I be better off using WiFi instead of 4G anyways?! Again....correct me if I'm wrong! I just used the WiFi in my house for the first time on my phone (I use it for laptops and my PS3 but not on my phones) and the web pages are loading up A LOT faster than my 3G connection! I went to mobilespeedtest (because that's the only site I know to test your phones speed on the phone itself) and ran the test, the results were kinda embarrassing! I will post these links to the results and let you guys be the judge........

Max 3G speed results (after running the test about 15 times):
http://www.mobilespeedtest.com/results/1121081745.jpg

Max WiFi speed result (after running the test about 15 times):
http://www.mobilespeedtest.com/results/1121086356.jpg

Comments and flames are welcome!

Forgot to mention that when doing them it tested my WiFi connection for a 7MB file......it only let the 3G connection go up to a 3MB file, wouldn't let me go any further than that!

Re: 4G vs. WiFi

Welcome back...and of course in-home internet will always be faster then any mobile solution..the 4G is on the GO or if you want to not pay extra for home internet and etc...

Also keep in mind latency will be a lot lower on home connection over 3g...4g has better latency then 3g though.

Re: 4G vs. WiFi

Thanks....so yeah! The thing is that when I'm out I'm either driving or doing something so I don't have a lot of time to use my phone aside from down times! Another thing I was thinking about is the fact that if I'm home already than I can be charging the phone while using Wifi as opposed to being out somewhere and the phone not charging...or not charging as much!

So NOW the question is will the EVO be able to use the apps that need 4G to function over a Wifi connection?! If so than I could REALLY care less about 4G, even if it comes to my city!

unless you live in grand rapids dont expect 4g anywhere else in MI for 2010. as with any compact device radios tear up battery use. there is no way around that. at least you are getting a 1500 mAh battery with the ability to have as many charged up spares that your wallet can tolerate. whereas the fruitphone from cupertino has all the mobile charge its going to have until its back on some sort of charger.

in the long run if you need to be the first one in the big D to have one then go ahead and get one, but if you are waiting for 4g in that area... no dice in 2010 (although miracles do happen)

Re: 4G vs. WiFi

No doubt I'm getting the phone......makes my TP2 look like feces! I was just wondering anyways though! Just thought I would try the wifi on the TP2 and its a lot better than 3G!

I can care less about a charge because I have one of those plug thingies in my car and I can charge the phone fully while driving and not from a cigarette lighter!

And I thought "why would I go somewhere to use 4G to get higher speeds when I have a faster connection right @ home.....the same connection that powers about 5 devices in my house right now (EVO being the 6th)"....seems kinda stupid to me!

I can't wait to use Google Goggles though, been waiting on a program like that for years!

I've used it on my gf's Hero. It's pretty cool, but not as awesome as you'd imagine. Faces, plant leaves, animals, etc don't work very well.

I even took a perfect picture of my TP2 and all it came up with is Sprint's website because of the Sprint logo on it.

Re: 4G vs. WiFi

OH, okay! I'm pretty sure it'll be a different experience on the EVO but who knows! Its Google.........I'm pretty sure they're updating their database's a lot......or even using us (the consumer) to do the work for them!

Re: 4G vs. WiFi

I'm not worried about 4g, in fact, I don't care if I even see or use it. It seems so fast on 3g, and even on 1x, that I'm happy

Re: 4G vs. WiFi

Yeah................me either! So with my wifi being faster than 4G, just imagine how it would be on a high speed wifi connection.....as you can see from the links in the 1st post?!?!?!?!

on sprint, calls are still not made over 3G, or their EVDO network in this case, but instead over their 1X network. also, voice and data is not possible so it's either one or the other.

what's good with the 4G (wimax), if you're lucky enough to have it in your area, is that it uses a completely separate radio, so data over 4G and voice at the same time is possible.

i'm in the Denver "area" and am excited and doubtful at the same time to see just how much of Denver will be covered later this year. can't wait to get the phone though, may WinMo rest in peace!
