We were talking about WiFi, not hotspotting. You then started talking about paying extra for HD being an option. So I brought up that paying for 4G is not an option.

Sorry you couldn't follow along. Maybe you should not be on here acting like you know everything if you can't follow your own logic...

are you kidding me?

to quote the fine print in question:

"SPRINT MOBILE HOTSPOT ADD-ON...."

we are talking about whether that feature is needed to use wi-fi of any sort....or to use the phone as a wifi router, ie. mobile hotspot

i used an ANALOGY to compare it to television subscriptions

seriously man?

Also the app in question that they are pushing hard is a wifi app so why would they bring up bluetooth and usb?
I'm pretty sure their tethering app also works through USB.

It makes no sense why they would say WiFi, if that is not what they really meant.

Also, do your homework, there have been plenty of companies that crippled certain features unless you pay extra. Heck, their tethering app itself is an example of that.

I had a DSL modem that had a bunch of features missing from the firmware unless you paid extra for a "networking" service (like $5 per month). And if you stopped paying, the features were remotely disabled.

Verizon and AT&T both disabled WiFi and bluetooth in the firmware of previous devices.

Is it really that hard to believe Sprint and HTC would not include WiFi in the firmware, and if you pay for the service you get an automatic firmware update that adds it, and if you stop paying for it you get another automatic update that removes it? It is totally possible. and if that's what Sprint has to do to keep the tethering from being hacked, I could totally see it happening.

The quote in fine print is "Sprint Mobile Hotspot add-on required to access Wi-Fi on device." it is NOT "Sprint Mobile Hotspot add-on required to use device as a mobile hotspot."

So yes, you used an analogy, and I piointed out exactly why your analogy doesn't fit here. Not only did Sprint use the exact same analogy, but then they made the charge mandatory.

There is no way for the wifi to know if you have paid for the HotSpot so how could the disable it unless you do so? Even if it was possible there would be an app in a week or so to bypass it..lol

after looking into your signature, and your argument on here... i can see you are a crazy conspiracy wackadoodle...i will say this: sprint is deliberately crippling the evo 4g's wifi in order to make YOU pay more...they are doing this to make you suffer...they are doing this because they know you are out there...if only you didnt start to question them...damn them

they can block features yes but only software., but they can't block hardware with a push of a button or electronically. if they want to unblock hardware a software update has to be pushed to the phone. For instance gps was locked on the mogul then when they wanted to make it active, it wasn't just a simple push of a button, a software update was needed to access gps. the only thing att, verizon, or sprint can do is block it by a software update which turns it off to all apps and programs. So yes sprint could technically block wifi, but if they did that it wouldn't be possible to use their app. What you're saying is physically impossible.

While disabling WIFI is possible via firmware update and etc it would not prevent people from accessing it once they root. But it would add extra development..if anything they will just disable the wifi on load and only enable it once it authenticates for 1 day after which if it does not authenticate again it disables.

But I think this would kinda screw them over all and my guess is wifi Hot spot is only thing that requires authentication. It is more hassle then it is worth.

And this is the heart of the disagreement. yes, there IS a way for the WiFi to know if you have paid for it or not.

I used to have a 2 Wire 2700 DSL modem that "knew" if I had paid for the monthly networking package or not, and it would enable or disable a bunch of features accordingly. Sprint's 4G service is supposedly faster than that that old DSL line (and their 3G service is on par with it), so why wouldn't this phone be able to do that with the right firmware?
