It's a little of both. You are actually gaining access to the Super User profile in Android, so that is what rooting does, via software, but each phone requires a different process. What rooted the Hero will not work for the Evo. Even the GSM hero root process was different than the CDMA version.

ok, so hopefuly just a matter of time.
i do'nt use tethering much with my diamond, but once in awhile with no wifi nearby and i need to check something on laptop i'll do it, and for that reason its not really worth it to pay for PAM add on...

I was just about to post this. With the EVO being upgradeable to Froyo ( lord knows when it will actually be released tho), I wonder how they're going to be able to keep charging for the mobile hotspot access when froyo does it natively.
