I use a iphone arm band..... You have to work it in but it works for me....

You mention background data being on, but what about "Enable Always-On Mobile Data"? It's under menu, settings, wireless & networks, mobile networks. Make sure that option is checked. Maybe your phone is dropping the data connection when in stand by, which kills pandora.

I listen to MP3s on my phone, so I don't have this issue, but background data, and always on mobile data are two different settings on the phone.
