My other half has the Eris and loves it. I still have my Omnia which is starting to feel dated. Surprisingly no matter how much you beg and plead, Verizon wont buckle and let you upgrade any time you want, even after years of being a loyal customer and having 4 phones on the account.

That's strange, although I do hear this a lot.
I've had 3 manager's exceptions, 3 early upgrades on 2 of my 3 lines and have a pending 1 year pricing on my third line that I can use whenever I'd like. I've found Verizon to be one of the easiest to get an early upgrade out of, next to Qwest - who no longer has their own wireless division.
Of course, it could be that I pay $200+/- a month for their service, so they know they'll recoup the cost
