Question Internet is Expensive

Internet-cable or dsl, is expensive. I am almost tempted to just use the diamond as my home modem. That could save $360 over a year. what is your opinion? what is the sprint speed? for those of you who think it...Yes I'm Frugal! (cheap)

Re: Internet is Expensive

its works ok for internet browsing, downloading videos its slow and laggy, plus it depends on your coverage area. plug it in your computer and run a speedtest, and compare to your cable/dsl speed. If you are going to upload, thats where a major difference occurs between Sprint and Cable/DSL. i use my phone as a modem at home and it works just fine unless im streaming a video or downloading a song.

I generally use a bit torrent to download video then watch it later.

I use PAM (Free, thanks Sprint!) as my primary Internet, and let me tell you, it's exellent!

Now, by no means does it completely compare with broadband, but for all intents and purposes, you wouldn't even notice unless you were downloading a 1 gig movie (about 4-5 hours where I am, you might have better speeds where you are). Otherwise, it's fast, and perfect! (Youtube, twitter, whatever!)

I routinely use about 5.5 gigs of data a month. (ALOT of surfing and downloading music). That usage pattern will be 2 years old come March 2010. Nope, Sprint doesn't bug me. Proof of a "soft" 5 gig cap.

Later!

Re: Internet is Expensive

max download for Sprints 3G network is 3.1 Mbps and thats max download speed. Average is 1.7 - 2.3 Mbps.

Journey, Using PAM the way we do, Sprint doesnt see that you are using it as PAM, thats why you can use more than 5GB and not get charged for it. If you had an aircard or signed up for the PAM plan (50 bucks extra) they would charge you for going over 5GB. Hence the reg edits for WinMo

I know that bro, but I actually HAVE unlimited PAM via the PAM1 SOC code on my account (Pre 5gig cap, and pre 50 to 15 dollar price reduction)

That's actually why I haven't been charged, I forgot about that, lol I read somewhere that "old" PAM doesn't have the cap, but I'm paranoid, and have just watched Sprints reaction to my usage. I actually use the phone as modem option on ROMs that have it.

So OP, listen to what he said, and make sure you get a ROM with the "DATA" reg edits. Thanks nxtech!

Re: Internet is Expensive

you can use any ROM, you would just have to do the Registry Edits, which can be found on this site. i was using the stock sprint ROM, and just doing the registry edits worked just fine. but a custom ROMs run so much smoother (depending on the ROM) If you dont already have a Registry Editor, a great free one is PHM Registry Editor, which again can be found on this site.

But then your phone would melt over an extended period of time, lol

Edit: I don't know from personal experience, but I've read that the Diamond get's really hot if you use WiFi (PAM) for a long time.

joke?
cuz if there is WiFi available, there is little point in using the Diamond to provide Internet to your laptop or home PC... duh...
