if you want the stock sprint rom get groove 1.2. it will require you to flash but it has fm radio enabled.

Thanks for the straight answer, signde. I understood 'what' the issue was, but my question is 'why'? Maybe no one has the answer, I don't know.

Going through all of tobeychris' generously provided links (each of which I had looked at before asking my apparently 'smart-***' question) doesn't seem to answer it.

i've often wondered the same thing myself. the cdma carriers and htc are probably the only people that know the answer to that question.
