This is true as I used it this way for the short time I had my Instinct. As you probably noticed you were not able to sync calendar and contacts this way. WM devices are designed to sync directly with Exchange servers but your Exhcange Administrator needs to grant you permissions on the server to do so.

When I used Blackberry there were two ways to retrieve emails. I don't know if this has changed. One was using an Blackberry Enterprise server and the other was using one of Blackberry's Internet Services. The Internet version was basically a rule set up in Outlook the forwarded your email to your Blackberry. This was sometime back and like I said I don't know if it has changed since I have been out of the BB loop for quite some time.
