That's so odd. So the cover needs to come off in order to soft reset?...weird, I totally agree with you.
From looking at that surface, it shouldn't be difficult to paint at all. Just need some painters tape to cover the camera strip. Take non-metallic model paint (flat black or whatever other color you want), do 3 even coats on the outside and inside. It should be quick and simple.
