Mobile Email and AIM

Ok so let me first say that I am a total WM6 noob.

I would like to run outlook and AIM on the device but I dont want to have to have it docked to do so. I want to receive emails while I have my device with me instead of only when it is docked. I set up my email server on my computer's outlook, but I only receive emails when I am docked and outlook is open. any other way to?

Also what is the best program to run AIM with? I have heard complaints with OctroTalk and wanted an alternative.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the noobness of this thread

EDIT: What are some good games for the ppc that are free? I only have solitaire and bubble breaker
I really want that side scroller game with the spaceship. Its an action games where you go through and shoot missles at everything. haha dont flame me just bc I cant describe it!

Well to get your mail from your Outlook to your phone you will have to sync somehow, either it be wirelessly via BT or wired. However, if you have a data plan on your phone you could always connect via 'data line' and download your mail that way.

As for IM apps. I used to use IM+ (which is a paid for app) but recently converted over to Palringo (which is a free app and a bit better IMHO)

Yeah I have a data plan. I just thought that I would probably need to set up a new connection to connect to the mail server and I have less than no clue as to how to do that. This phone is kinda bugging me so far. I've been having problems making/receiving calls as well...

Well WM6 is full of bugs still. Thats why it was released to be tested by everyone. As for your email settings, all you need is the same info you need for Outlook. You need your email UID/Pass and email server addresses (POP3 and SMTP)

temp fix

well... i found a temporary fix, if you go into "programs" and find "Palringo" and delete "trayicon" out of its folder it will temporarily remove the palringo icon from the tray area of the today screen until an update is automatically downloaded. now i haven't tried it yet... but if u delete the update.dll it might work as to allow you to remove the icon for longer... but i would recommend backing up both files first before you try this.

I find palringo a little lacking. The inability to view profiles/away messages for AIM shows that it really isnt meant for it. Also I don't believe you can set an away message yourself. Just bleh

Question I Heard...

...that in the USA that in order to have AIM on your PPC that you have to pay for it as opposed to in the UK you get it for free. Now that's just ridiculous, isn't it?

My friend has been trying to put AIM on his Palm Treo. Shouldn't he be able to do that?? Fo' FREE?!

You are so correct. I remember that when I had a Toshiba 2032 (Thera) and wanted to use AIM IM you had to buy it if you were in the US. However, if you went to the UK version of the AOL site you could DL and use it for free. I always thought it was crazt too. However, with so many IM apps out there and with so many ppl using different apps, it is almost essential now-a-days to have an IM app that does several carriers.

Supermanwoot <--> Try using IM+ then because with it you can do away msgs and I think you can view profiles.

Palringo is indeed "lacking". The inability to keep multiple messanger windows open at one time, for instance. I'm only allowed to talk to one person? Your options when in a message are "send" or "close", and if you close it, there's no list of current windows. It's nice and all, but the lack of that features is a deal-breaker for me.

However i've installed the regular classic aim, and i've had issues with it before, always getting "this IP is already in use" or "Communications error". I've yet to figure out how to resolve these issues. If anyone has insight, it would be greatly appriciated.

For those that are curious, you can download classic aim for windows mobile here:
http://info.aol.co.uk/aim/wince/index.html

I have had this working before, just not consistantly, and never for long. When it works, it is exactly what i'm looking for. Maybe Palringo can take the ability for multiple windows, even if emulated, or a tab for messages that you currently have open, from AOL & AIM and integrate it into their system.
