I'm not sure but I think the iphone has a capacitive touch screen, much like a laptop touch pad, whereas the Apache has a resistive touch screen. The capacitive (or inductive) touch screen doesn't really even require direct contact, just something to interfere with the electric field. The resistive touch screen requires force to press the two conductive sheets together to form a kind of potentiometer. The only reason there is a bezel on the resistive screens is to hide the electrodes running up and down the sides of one layer and the top and bottom of the other layer, and those electrodes need to be wired into the touch screen controller. Not terribly pretty. The other type is probably hidden behind the touch screen since to direct contact is needed.
