Do a hard reset. Both "-" buttons + reset button.
You'll get a screen asking you to press Y or N. Press Y to erase all personal data and reset the device to the ROM's default settings. Depending on your version, it might ask you to press spacebar after that. When the device reboots it will go through the whole screen calibration and all of that, just like it came out of the box for the first time.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but the call info won't show up anymore once the phone is taken off the account, right?
You'll have to deactivate it first or whoever gets it will be able to make calls on your dime with that ESN #. |

Better yet, do a Master Reset so all phone data (including the phone number) is deleted.
##786# ; press "reset" on the bottom. Make sure you have your MSL available.

Well first of all who is your carrier? If you're with verizon (and possibly other carriers as well) Master Reset isn't available.
Yes each phone has a unique MSL. You should be able to call your carrier and get it. Just tell them you need to reprogram your phone. They will give you a number in the from ##123456#. The six digits in between the # signs are your MSL. To master reset you enter ##RTN# on the phone keypad. Note if that doesn't seem to do anything then master reset probably isn't available to you. If it does bring up the EPST then hit the right softkey (labeled Reset) and enter your MSL when it prompts you. That will zap the nvm of the phone and erase all personal data. |

As with most electronic storage, this doesn't delete all the data - just makes the computer forget how to read it.
I saw an article not that long ago about a company that purchased a pile of PDA type phones on ebay and using forensics tools pulled out all the personal information, even if it had been hard reset. |
