I would have been one of the few that would have reported lower radio signal after the upgrade. I gave it a few days and it was definately worse than with original. That was before I ditched the stock verizon setup for the latest Kitchen. Now I am seeing major improvements!!

I just upgraded to Radio 1.41 last night (was on Radio 1.1), and it looks like I am seeing slightly better reception. I don't know about battery drain yet, but ...

I have seen what appears to be a significant reduction in EVDO data speeds. I am not sure yet whether this is a Radio ROM or AKU 3.5 Kitchen issue.

Prior to the 1.0.3 Kitchen and Radio upgrade, I was running Kirvin's AKU 3.5 C&S4AA and Verizon's Radio 1.1.

Yesterday, I was seeing regular EVDO download speeds of 470-550 Kbps. Now, the fastest EVDO download I have seen is 260 Kbps (averaging around 140 Kbps) at the same site (dslreports.com).

I would like to try going back to Radio 1.1 to test this out, but where can I get an installer for it?

¿GotJazz?

I withdraw my earlier statement.

When I tested my EVDO speeds at home, I was seeing much faster results than described above (even up to 768 Kbps!). I am not sure why I saw the slower EVDO download speeds in the other building. I typically have seen 470-550 Kbps in the other building, but maybe what I saw today was an anomaly.

If I find the slower EVDO problem persisting, I will let y'all know.

help!

Okay all, I'm new to this. I have a new ROM my husband installed a couple months ago from this site but it's wigging on both of our phones now (we both have vx6700s with verizon). I read there is a new ROM but am totally confused how to install it. How do I know what version I have and what Radio version I have????
Would love to have better coverage....Also, the version we currently have does not allow for voice commands-so I'm hoping (and I believe it looks like) the new one does allow for this. Am I reading this correctly?
Help a newbie to vx6700 modding figure out what to do next..thanks!
P.s. I d/led the verizonnk.nbf file from colonel's ftp today (08/05/07). It's on my memory card. Now what do I do? Did i even get the right file? I am not making a move until I hear for sure-I don't want to brick my vx6700.
Thanks!

Sprint 6700 w/current helmi 3.5 - 1.03 rom wont take 1.41

Here are the specs:

Sprint6700 BL v2.02
Running Helmi 3.5 v1.03 rom (successfully)
Vista OS, UAC=off, Admin logon
WMDC 6.1

cannot seem to get it to load. Using the v2.02 RUU i get the "error 120 - Country Code" error.

using the APACUpgradeUt_noID RUU i get the "error 150 - not for your device"

I am manually putting the device into boot mode as instructed.
I have tried disabling the USB connection in WMDC6.1 - same errors either way
I have tried both running the install immediately again when i receive the error without exiting the previous error, running it after closing out the error box with no success.
I tried running the BL in compatibility mode for WINXPsp2 - same errors
I have tried running a WINXP VM - same errors

Can anyone provide feedback on this?

Is it possible i am receiving a conflict due to it being flashed for Sprint?
If i re-build my Helmi ROM with a Verizon.prj is it possible it will then take the radio upgrade?
If i am successful with the upgrade via the Verizon method, should i then expect conflict trying to re-flash with the proper Sprint.prj?

I know there is a solution :-) i know i cannot do this alone - help!

cheers

bsaatbman 08-05-2007 09:25 PM

I have found that when getting the "error 150" message that my phone has been connected to a hub, after connecting directly to the computer the update begins...
Now my current issue is that it has been at 77% complete for awhile now, anyone else having this issue, how long does it usually take to update??

So I took it off the cradle reset the phone and tried again and now all is well.

thanks

Update -

Tried 2 different host machines
All USB connections have been Direct, no hubs involved.

Still not taking the Radio update - same errors as before.

Sprint6700 / wont take 1.41 radio update

Okay,

I re-read all the previous posts in the thread and realize my thoughts about it being some sort of a carrier conflict are invalid.

VM - i was mismapping my COM1 port in the VirtualMachine to my physical USB port.

I booted an XPSP2 notebook and it took the 1.41 Radio Stack without issue. I had previously tried running the BL on Vista in compatibility mode however it clearly is not the same emulation as running it on a real XP box. I think if a person can map their VM COM1 port to their physical USB then you can do the flash via XP running in a VM.

Now i am proudly running:

Helmi Kitchen v1.04 custom ROM, Radio stack 1.41 w/PRL 20229 PRI 1.19_003

What a great experience this has been, thank you all who made these forums possible.

Karmashock 08-07-2007 09:41 AM

what version of the radio is in kitchen 1.0.3?

phoenx06 08-07-2007 12:27 PM

There is no radio update in the kitchen. All the kitchen creates is a ce rom image. Not ext rom, or radio.

tr2518 08-07-2007 05:19 PM

I just ran FrieldTrial breifly on two XV6700's located side by side in a poor receiving area. One has Radio version 1.10 and the other has 1.41

Radio 1.10
Rx Power -96 dbm
Rx Ec/Io 20 db

Radio 1.41
Rx Power -92
Rx Ec/Io 11 db

I'll try to run a longer test tomorrow and post the results. I'll also get the ROM versions for both. Is there anything else that would help determine if one radio is better than the other? Something more that "more bars"?

luv2chill 08-07-2007 07:22 PM

The true test would be to keep those phone in the exact same location at the exact same time of day and reverse their radio ROMs (i.e. the one that had 1.41, flash to 1.10 and vice-versa).

Karmashock 08-07-2007 08:40 PM

is the only advantage of this to get extra bars/a better connection to sprint/verizon?

Because my phone has always had awesome reception... better then anyone else's anyway... :)

answerman 08-07-2007 08:49 PM

Finally, someone answered my question!

Original question:

<snip>
Now, if someone says they were pulling -95dB before the upgrade and -75dB after, that would be a verifiable improvement.

And then today I saw this:

That's what I was looking for... though as luv2chill pointed out, it would be better to do a before/after on the same phone, which was my original point. I honestly didn't want to go through the whole flashback to the original radio and then to the new just to find out... was hoping someone more forward thinking than me would have thought about this before they upgraded their radio.

Doesn't sound like it, though. So, my original question still stands, if there is anyone out there that hasn't upgraded yet and is planning on it.

YzRacer 08-07-2007 10:36 PM

I just upgraded and called Sprint and got my updated PRL. The process went very smoothly so thanks to phoenx06 for that. I have noticed a couple of clitches so far.

I am running the Colonel's 3.5 for sprint, and while the update went smoothly and my phone is working.... my internet symbol displays EV even though there is only 1X in my area. I also tried dialing the debug number provided in this thread and it didn't work, however it worked fine before the update.

TJ 08-08-2007 01:30 AM

phoenx06, thanks very much. You post, you answer. Results are our problem. Your work is appreciated.

DAMBRO24 08-08-2007 02:54 AM

does nthis work on the 6800 mogul?

adam2dot0 08-08-2007 01:10 PM

well phoenx06, I'd hit the plus next to your name but i have no rep points to give :(

bimmerd00d 08-08-2007 01:43 PM

Seemed to make my Sprint PPC6700 have a few less bars. I'll leave it be for a few days and see what happens. I updated my PRL earlier too.

phoenx06 08-08-2007 01:54 PM

adam2dot0: Thanks for trying, lol :)

DAMBRO24: No, this is specific to the 6700

YzRacer 08-08-2007 02:04 PM

Has anyone else had the constant EV signal when you know you should only have 1x?

adam2dot0 08-08-2007 04:30 PM

I seem to get better reception with the updated radio. WOOT!

nielsassa 08-08-2007 04:45 PM

Me too, not just more bars, but on the spots (at home) that I know I usually got no signal and dropped calls, right now I got at least 2 bars and phone call never drop anymore.

Thanks for the radio rom....

phguy65 08-08-2007 10:42 PM

working like a charm

Again, thanks for the upgrade. I live in an area with fairly strong signal strength, but now I rarely get any fluctuation in signal (always max bars) or btwn EVDO and 1X (stays on EVDO). Excellent work Phoenix!

Krayziepop 08-09-2007 08:49 AM

I haven't seen anybody try testing the new radio the way I have just yet... It literally makes my phone unusable while travelling. If you are in an EVDO area and can get pretty easily to a 1x area you can test it too. Just tether your phone to a notebook computer (alt. you may just be able to stream some music on the handset for a while) and drive out of the EV service area... It usually takes about 20 minutes of my phone streaming data on EV to die, but as I leave the EV zone it hard locks just the internet connection on the device. No data will transfer, the data arrows go grey and the phone refuses to manually halt the connection. This requires a soft reset to correct. Now if I stay in EV all day in the same spot, it may be different - but I drive a semi for a living and its not too often I hang out in one place for too long.

For those of you just chillin' in one spot, this upgrade is probably good for you. Once you travel though I think you will find the resets get annoying after a while. I have tried this radio rev. with 3 different ROM's now and get the same results each time.

(Note - I also noticed instead of just getting these 'gains' in performance, driving through Ohio yesterday it actually degraded performance severely in quite a few spots... this upgrade is a huge YMMV...)

schettj 08-09-2007 09:01 AM

It's odd - this update seems to have tons of issues for some, and be the best thing since sliced bread for others.

I drove from San Jose to LA and back post update using Windows Live Search + BT GPS for directions for 10+ hours. The phone flipped between EV and 1x about 20 times, hopped towers there and back, even (when going thru the mountains) lost signal and regained it, all the while "connected" and streaming data, and it performed flawlessly with the latest radio rom and PRL.

Did you update your PRL, and what is your PRI? Are your running a 3.x ROM?

Krayziepop 08-09-2007 12:20 PM

PRL: 20229
PRI: 1.20_003

Currently running a 1.04 custom kitchen, but have tried several others too - including the stock 2.2 from Sprint... same issue every time.

What is the most up to date PRL and PRI version?
I am running: PRL 20226 and PRI 1.13_003
Should I update?

schettj 08-09-2007 02:18 PM

Sprint /10.3 custom kit

Your PRL/PRI is actually later then mine!

PRL 20227
PRI 1.19_003

:(

I have no idea then... (you didn't let cuts. run and installed the sprint-specific OEMs I assume)

Krayziepop 08-09-2007 03:41 PM

No sir, I have an empty ext_rom for now. Even if that were the case, I shouldn't have had the issue with the original ROM since it needs the customizations to function...

Maybe the newer PRI has something to do with it... though I am pretty sure the PRI version changed with the 20229 PRL.

tr2518 08-09-2007 09:01 PM

Maybe someone has already answered this but I can not find it...Where can I download the Verizon 1.10 radio?

tr2518 08-09-2007 09:20 PM

I just found it at http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/ but I just ran it and it updated the radio, ext rom and CE Rom. I guess I should have extracted the executable file to pull just the radio. Oh well, I guess now I can test it with the original set up.

tr2518 08-09-2007 11:08 PM

I just perform two tests with the VZW 1.10 radio for 5 minutes each at 5 sec intervals. I'm in a small town 1x area.

#1 Untouched ROM update from http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/

Rx Power averaged -82.4 dbm
Rx Ec/Io averaged 15.75 db

#2 Helmi AKU 3.5 1.0.4

Rx Power averaged -81 dbm
Rx Ec/Io averaged 10.5 db

Before I went back to the HTC ROM, I had radio 1.41 loaded.
Same location, My house. No actual note taking test done but
this is what I recall from looking at it A LOT.

Rx Power averaged lower to mid -90's dbm
Rx Ec/Io averaged mid teens to lower 20's.

Of course, I don't really have a clue what this means  but I believe the lower the number the better, right?

coreyoli 08-10-2007 07:26 AM

I loaded this on my Verizon phone yesterday.. I always have a good signal, but figured it wouldn't be a bad idea, since I was at 1.10...

I'm having no problems... I really didn't notice a huge improvement, but I always have good signal at work and at home... I'll have to test it out where I ride my quad, that'll be the true test, since I drop a lot of calls out there!

Thanks for the post!

YzRacer 08-10-2007 06:18 PM

I downgraded back to the 1.27 radio to see if my EV indicator would go back to 1x. ITS STILL STUCK ON EV! So now I don't know what the problem is... maybe the prl which i have the newest one. I did a hard reset no help.

setite 08-10-2007 06:21 PM

For shits and giggles I will post. I am running fieldtrial right now. But sitll trying to find out which radio i have. I am using Helmi 10.3 and will be updating to 10.4 as soon as I am able to install office so I can sync my contacts.

Radio 1.10.
Rx Power -72(flux from -71 to -74 at 5 sec interval)
Rx Ec/Io 16db(flux from 16-19)

Will post 1.41 results in an hour or so when Im done updating.

Verizon xv6700 with already good EVDO coverage. About 5 minutes testing on the same phone using fieldtrial.exe

Radio 1.27
Rx Power: -72 dbm (low of -82, high of -66)
Rx Ec/Io: 8 db (low of 5, high of 15)

Radio 1.41
Rx Power: -70 dbm (low of -75, high of -667

I had 1.41 installed a while back when it first came out then moved back to 1.27 because 1.41 seemed to take almost 2x as long to establish a data connection. I just re-flashed again to 1.41 and the first time it took a long time to establish a data connection, but subsequent ones were okay. But as you can see the only difference for me was maybe a slightly more stable/consistent cellular connection.

Wildog27 08-11-2007 04:45 PM

Hey all. I just wanted to let you know I did this upgrade after installing Jeff Kirwin's new Clean and Simple ROM and it got stuck on the opening splash page after the soft reset.

Once I did a hard reset, it worked fine.
