2 types of 6700s (+ conspiracy theories + bluetooth issues)

Has anyone noticed that there are 2 types of 6700s, and it doesn't appear to me to follow the Sprint/Verizon versions? The reason I say this is that when I hard reset my XV6700 (NO MATTER WHAT ROM IS INSTALLED - I have tried them all), it says, "Press Y to restore factory default Press N to exit". It has never asked me to press "Space", but it does on a colleague's phone that I have updated the rom on several times. In reading through the rom threads, it seems that the majority of people have to press space. So my conclusion is that there are 2 (atleast) different hardware versions of the 6700. Most likely, my version is the older of the 2.

So who cares? Exactly what I was thinking... except... for all those threads I have read where someone or a few people have been having a particular problem with their phone that others can't seem to replicate. It seems possible that at least some of these issues could be related to this. Am I off base here? Has this been discussed somewhere?

For example, I have been having a bluetooth issue since I can't remember when. My bluetooth connection terminates many times throughout the day (either after a period of inactivity, my headset has been out of range for a short time, or during a long call) - on all rom updates I have tried. Most of the time, the wireless manager indicates that bluetooth is ON, but when I go to bluetooth settings the check box is off). Very frustrating! No regedits, cab installs, rom updates, programs (phonealarm, btcrawler), etc. have made a difference. By the way, I have a plantronics voyager headset that also pairs with my office phone, but it happens whether I am in the office or not).

So unless I can find a solution soon I'll going back to the latest offical rom. Any ideas would be much appreciated...

You mean 6700 all the times you typed 6600 right? On my 6600 it never asked for space bar to be pressed... on my original 6700 it did not ask for the space bar either... however on all my recent 6700's it does ask for the space bar to be pressed to reboot...

First are we talking about a 6700 or a 6600?

There are 2 hardware versions of the 6700 this has been discussed there was a chip set change around the time the logos changed from red to yellow, so unless you have a 6700 with the red logo I doubt you have the older chip set.

I think the space bare to confirm a hard rest was added when the 2.6 rom was released from sprint. I could be wrong here

I and many others have had the same bluetooth problems change the bluetooth device you are using, the multi connect (connects with more than one phone) headsets have always had a problem staying connected to the 6700. There is a reg edit to change the bluetooth sleep time on the 6700 that was reported to help with this but it eats battery. I would have to do some searching to find the thread but it is here search this forum if you don't find it let me know and I will try to find the thread.

I edited the post to make it clear that I was talking about the 6700.

So that leaves the question of whether the version that I have (that does not ask for the space bar to be pressed) - which does not appear to me to be dependent upon what rom is installed - causes any problems. For one thing, would there be any reason to warranty it out and get a new one? Should people care which hardware version they have?

With respect to the bluetooth issue, are you referring to the btl regedit? I'll look to see if I can find the thread you're referring to, but I have looked extensively in the past and don't remember seeing the thread about headsets that pair with multiple devices. Thanks for the heads up though.

Hey Big D5, I found this post:

http://www.ppcgeeks.com/bt-issues-wi...antronics.html

But didn't see a registry edit. It seems like some people had better luck with newer phones. I guess I need to start testing my roms without certain programs installed, and may even go back to the original rom to see what happens. Right now I'm running an r4 kitchen based rom with phonealarm, wisbar lite, and the wireless today plugin. Anyone of these it seems could be contributing to the problem.

Also, do you ever get a loud buzz on your bluetooth instead of sound when a call connects. I have to shut off the headset quickly and soft reset later or the buzz will keep coming back. Weird. This happens with my Plantronics 510 and also with a Jabra headset I had before that.

OK here's the scoop. Apaches use a DOC (Disk-on-chip) for their flash storage. There are two hardware versions of that chip--G3 (which uses the 1.x level bootloader) and G4 (which uses the 2.x level). The G4 should have a bit better speeds but a bit less capacity than the G3 chip.

Sprint's model switched to G4 very early in its lifecycle. The only Sprint 6700s with the G3 chip are the original red-logos and some of the very early yellow-logo units. Everything else has been G4-based.

Verizon seems to have many more G3s out there (plenty of verizon users have the 1.x bootloader) and also has some G4s. I'm not sure about other carriers.

So anyway, you'll just have to settle for a bit less space(approx. 4mb), as finding new units with G3 chips is gonna be difficult. Consider it a tradeoff for slightly better read/write speeds
Thanks. That pretty much answers my question on that issue!

For the record, I have never seen the spspacebar confirmation you speak of. My 6700 is from Alltel and I got it the first day they had it available (almost 2 years ago) so they apparently had the G3 at least early on as well.

And FWIW, I have never had any Bluetooth issues (have a Jabra BT350 headset and a Holux GPSlim 236)... not sure if that's pertinent or not.

Since I can't seem to figure out a way to keep the 3.5 rom (unless anyone has some ideas - including the regedit that was referred to - can you point me in the right direction), I may go back to a 2.x rom (hopefully this will solve my problem). In that case, which 2.x rom should I go back to - is there a good custom 2.x rom I should look for?

Is there any way to change the bluetooth stack completely or take the bluetooth stack from an older rom or something along those lines so I can keep a 3.5 rom? If that would even help...

Actually the upcoming 3.3 kitchen seems promising to solve some of these bluetooth issues... I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
