OK here's the scoop. Apaches use a DOC (Disk-on-chip) for their flash storage. There are two hardware versions of that chip--G3 (which uses the 1.x level bootloader) and G4 (which uses the 2.x level). The G4 should have a bit better speeds but a bit less capacity than the G3 chip.
Sprint's model switched to G4 very early in its lifecycle. The only Sprint 6700s with the G3 chip are the original red-logos and some of the very early yellow-logo units. Everything else has been G4-based.
Verizon seems to have many more G3s out there (plenty of verizon users have the 1.x bootloader) and also has some G4s. I'm not sure about other carriers.
So anyway, you'll just have to settle for a bit less space(approx. 4mb), as finding new units with G3 chips is gonna be difficult. Consider it a tradeoff for slightly better read/write speeds |
