It is strictly between the CDMA chip and the radio ROM on the device--the two aspects of these things that we know the least about (because there is no documentation to go on).
That was my point above... that it's not a ROM or OS issue. If someone can find a way to make this happen at the radio level, great. I just wouldn't expect much from it. My interest in making it work was honest more of a challenge of "proving it could be done" rather than finding any practical use for it.

It seems to me that this has to work some way. Both Sprint and Verizon offer gps positioning, so it has to be a signal that the phone can be told to receive from over the air. I don't believe that everyone who signs up for these programs has to take their phones to the Sprint store to have them upgraded.

I know it is not true gps but it gets you close enough.

But see you are exactly the kind of guy that figures these things out!

A lot of the stuff I have done in life has simply been because I was curious to see if I could make something do what it could but was not intended to.

Here is another thread expressing the varying opinions of whether the chip might be enabled.

Wow that was an interesting read... I gather Cameron is on the right track but I still don't get why, if it has the device built in, any company would try so hard to hide it? So what if 3% of 6700 users were able to make use of it. Do they have some kind of deal with the GPS aftermarket where they are not allowed to acknowledge it?

There was one person who claims his GPS software was working with the internal GPS until he did a hard reset and update. How could this be?

This is a like a good mystery!

The one statement from his log that best describes my feelings is; " Most people do not understand my point of view. It is possible for me to buy a Bluetooth GPS receiver and have better accuracy, but I choose not to. It's not about the accuracy, it's about having something there, but not being able to touch it, to use it, to explore it's potential."

I wish my skills were up to doing more work on this but sadly they are not. I tell ya what though I'd be willing to chip in some $$ just to solve this. Sure, I have two Pharoh BT units I could use but like Cameron said, it's all about using what is there.
