Unified ROM 1.0.0.43 RC4 PUBLIC BETA (Updated 4/4/2007)

This ROM/ROM kitchen is a work in progress. As such, the Unified ROM team has elected not to release the kitchen until we are sufficiently satisfied with the quality of the product. So, please do not ask for the kitchen. If you do not already have access to it, you will not get it.

This is the first public release of the Windows Mobile 5 AKU 3.5 ROM which the Unified ROM team has been working on for the past several weeks. When we (the Unified ROM team and you, the users) are happy with the state of the release, we will release the kitchen to the public. And then we, the Unified ROM folks, will go on a nice, long break from all this.

The list of bugs currently open is available via the Unified ROM Bugzilla page. If there is a bug that you would like fixed, please create an account and file it, as we are using that as our primary source of remaining issues. (Please be nice to the server - it's not particularly powerful, so it might be slow from time to time.)

The bugs addressed by the various releases:

Release Candidate 4:

Foundation:
Bug 12: The new Daylight Savings Time doesn't work

Infrastructure:
Bug 1: ROM Kitchen Cleanup
Bug 15: HTC-bundled applications should be updated
Bug 19: Users should be able to use the HTC Apache ROM utility to flash

User Interface:
Bug 20: ROM should look and feel like WM5

Release Candidate 3:

Applications (HTC):
Bug 15: HTC-bundled applications should be updated
Bug 18: WModem should provide .inf files

Foundation:
Bug 9: HTC Apache drivers should be updated
Bug 10: Bluetooth PAN does not work

User Interface:
Bug 16: Splash screen and Welcome Wizard Backrounds

Release Candidate 2:

Foundation:
Bug 3: Missing shortcuts in the Start Menu
Bug 4: Pocket MSN help file in \Windows\Helps?
Bug 7: The ROM kitchen should contain the .NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP3

Infrastructure:
Bug 1: ROM Kitchen Cleanup
Bug 14: default.hv and user.hv in the ROM kitchen has bogus values?

User Interface:
Bug 2: Inconsistent theme in AKU 3.5
Bug 6: Sounds not visible in notifications
Bug 8: ROM shouldn't be tied so closely to PPCGeeks

Release Candidate 1:

Foundation:
Fix Speed Dial issues
Missing Help files?

Infrastructure:
Can't find msvcrt71.dll

User Interface:
WM6 Smart Dial doesn't fit in

The ROM is available on the public FTP site here:

Thanks!

Finally! Thanks for the hard work team, but its unfortunate that you decided to keep the kitchen hidden. If I cant customize the rom with MMS and the threaded app its just not worth the space from the original until you release the kitchen.

This is just a step towards that. We need more folks to test the rom for bugs and then the kitchen will be released.

Hello,

Thanks for all the hard work!!!

I see .net 1 mentioned. For some reason I thought this was going to be .net 2 - can you please verify which version is on this rom?

Thanks again

From what I understand, when the kitchen is released, there will be available patches with it. These patches will include Crossbow themes and sounds as well as a patch to apply .net CF 2. These are being left as patches in the kitchen so people who do not want them can start with the clean rom.

Thanks Colonel, I appreciate the info. I thought I read that the 3.5 base had .net 2 so that was the version that was going to be used for the clean install.

Well, I think the issue is that once you put a .Net 2 in the rom, a user cannot apply an upgrade without building another rom. For instance, if the kitchen was built with the original .Net 2 that came out, it would be difficult for people to install the latest .Net 2 Sp2. And, as I understand it, it is impossible to run the upgrade cab of a later .Net 2 over preinstalled .net 2 components. Hope that makes sense. I may be off a little on this, but I know that I have run into issues with this as well.

Thanks - that makes sense. That is nice in case someone prefers .net 3.5 vs. 2.x.

For crossbow sounds and themes, I usually copy files from my crossbow folders that I got from one of the roms and paste it in the windows folder

Good news. I like the decision to use CF 1 due to smaller footprint. I look forward to helping with user testing once the kitchen is released.
