if you press the command key twice, it puts the phone in command-lock, so only the special characters are typed. Press the command button again to go back to normal.

Thats a wierd issue. I have never come across that issue once in the 2yrs I have had my 6700.

If it were hardware wouldn't it do it all the time? I mean, sliding it out doesn't "activate" the keyboard, it's always active. What I mean is, is that if he had a text message open and just sets his phone down, keyboard slid or not, it should enter characters.

Depends on where you are typing. If you are typing on the today screen the top row will ONLY allow you to type numbers. If in Word or a webpage, then using the top row will result in the letters unless you press the command button first.

Right, I would say open a text message and click the cursor in the actual text entry area then set your phone down for an hour and see if it does it.
