Tried it twice and hard reset is the only way... I even tried with the "do not reset device password" option checked in SPB before restoring. I also tried just restoring a couple of simple files, without checking the system or reg boxes. Now I'm afraid that using the backup utility is near useless because I'll need to hard reset the changes away, and am wary of testing any other products like sunnysoft or sprite in case the issue is with the kitchen and not the backup utils.
Any thoughts?

It's unlikely to be solely a WM6/kitchen issue, if it's partly a WM6/kitchen issue at all. Given your testing, it sounds like it's the application. Give the others a shot. I recommend you try creating and restoring a backup right after a hard reset, so you don't actually lose anything if it doesn't work.
You might also try disabling passwords before you make your backup and/or do a restore.
