Apache WM6 Kitchen CE OS 5.2.1908 (Build 18508.0.7.0) - UPDATED 20071217

How can this be? A friend of mine has the exact same phone as me, running WM5, and was able to upgrade his phone with this latest kitchen. I thought this new kitchen upgraded to a variant of WM6. Does anyone have any suggestions? What kitchen could I use that is designed for my version -WM5?

He is also able to use the tabs, and choose either WM5 or WM6. Apparently, he downloaded this kitchen prior to the one that was released on November 18th.

Yes, he's using an old version. He should upgrade. I disabled those comboboxes because people who changed them, with rare exception, misunderstood how to use them and were consequently more likely to damage their device than anything else. The correct values are now set automatically by the kitchen you are using, and are displayed for informational purposes only.

You misunderstand...

The "kitchen" is actually short for three pieces of software: BuildOS, which assembles ROMs for all kinds of devices/OSes; the kitchen SYS/OEM/ROM files, which are device and OS specific; and OEMs, which are generally not device specific.

You can load a WM6 Apache ROM on a WM5 Apache (because they're the same device), but you can't load an Apache ROM on a Titan, a wizard, a Q, or any other device.

In short, if you have the same device a ROM is designed for (like Apache or Titan), you can load it. That ROM will contain a specific OS - WM6 or WM5, currently - depending on which kitchen was used to build the ROM. If you had kitchen files for some other device/OS combination, BuildOS would be able to assemble a ROM for that device containing that OS. What buildOS can't do, and the comboboxes in the toolbar might have implied to some that it can do, is build a Titan rom from an Apache kitchen, or a WM5 rom from a WM6 kitchen.

I can't express the amount of thanks for your hard work and determination in first of all: developing this, and more importantly the amount of support, constant refining, improving and re-releasing this truely amazing upgrade.

You have probably saved my treasured XV6700 from being thrown at a wall, and saved me from needlessly spending money on a device with the same memory and a slower processor (SCH-i760) in the intirim of waiting for the XV6800's release. You have also probably prevented the unnessecary slaughter of innocent (or not so innocent) lives at Verizon stores everywhere.

So let me just understand this correctly. I currently own an apache which originally came with WM5. About a year ago, I upgraded to Jeff Kirvin's Clean & Simple. Now with the latest kitchen, I can upgrade to WM6? I was under the impression that only a device which originally came with WM6, could create WM6 Rom's with this kitchen - hence the two options in the main application windows that are now grayed out. I was under the impression that those options were to select which operating system originally came with the device. So I shouldn't have any trouble upgrading an Apache, that originally came with WM5, to this latest release of Hemli's Kitchen with a new WM6 ROM?

Correct.
This Kitchen will ONLY allow you to create a WM6 ROM for your Apache.
There are other (older) kitchens that will create WM5 and WM5 AKU3.5 ROMs, but that is not what is being discussed here.

You can build WM5 ROMs by putting a WM5 kitchen in BuildOS. I've done it many times. But you're right...this thread is about the Apache WM6 kitchen

Correct... I should have stated it as: This Kitchen as presented will ONLY allow you to create a WM6 ROM for your Apache.
Since anyone asking these questions probably shouldn't be messing with changing around the OEM, ROM or nk* files, I figured it was easier to skip the "possibilities" and "encourage" them to use what was there. And what is there will only create WM6. I know it's possible, but I'll leave the major tweaking to people like you who obviously know a whole lot more about this stuff than I. A big adventure for me is changing OEMs.

Yes, that is correct. This kitchen will install WM6 on you're Apache device. It will also allow you to select your carrier (Verizon,sprint, etc.), and can also include lots of useful apps in the ROM upgrade too.
