If you are with USCC you are already running 6.5

Definitely unlock so you can try custom ROMS. I'm just starting out myself, but there is ALOT of information available here and some really cool stuff!!

The USCC contacts backup is OK, but try the windows myphone for an easy way to backup a little more than just your contacts. there are alot of options but this one is easy to start with until you get acquainted better with all the possibilities.
