Other towers? No. If you are on Sprint, you access Sprint towers and ditto for VZW and the others.

What changes in the radio is the DSP functions (Digital Signal Processing) that are used to decode the the incoming signal and separate signal from noise, error correction and so forth.

These radios also probably play with amplification and signal strength, which can affect battery life if they are cranked up by the engineers who write the radios.

I'm not an RF engineer... but this is my best understanding of the radios.
