Best / most stable / fastest / most preferred SYS version

For you chefs out there who have been playing around with various SYS versions, I'm curious what version you think is the best. In my opinion, functionality (i.e. everything works - cameras, ActiveSync, etc.) is the highest weighted metric, followed by stability then performance. If you feel differently about the weighting, please say so in your post.

Please post the version number you like (or numbers if you wish to comment on multiples), where it came from (stock ROM for XYZ device on ABC carrier, leaked ROM for XYZ device on ABC carrier, Canal street, Beijing, etc.) and why you like it. Assuming I get more than a few responses, I'll try to keep this first post updated with the summary to spare folks reading the posts - but the reasons why will of course remain in the posts.

I'm starting with the versions I am aware of that folks are cooking with today - will add to this list as necessary.

Votes updated 4:30pm EST 3-Mar.

Votes Version
----- 19958/19972 (stock shipped VZW ROM)
----2 20757/20764 (most recent Diamond CDMA shipped ROM)
----1 20757/20954
----1 20765
----1 20771
----1 20931
----1 21009
----3 21013-21015 (possibly illegal or unreleased build with some WM6.5 code)
----4 21018
----- 21109 (possible hex edit)
----1 21139/21143 (WM6.5 - known bugs with camera, for example on CDMA Touch Pro and current OEMs)
----1 21159 (WM6.5)

FWIW, the stock Verizon ROM for TP ships with 19958/19972.

I'm not well versed on the sys's just yet but I have been playing around with cooking and watching your work closely. I just want to say if your planning on taking the recommendations and doing your magic with the winner can you please keep in consideration us Sprint TP users we dont need to be locked with such a small pagepool and all those fancy tricks you use to keep the ram low etc etc. Other than that thanks for all your hard work keep it up I look forward to using more of your stuff

Re: Best / most stable / fastest / most preferred SYS version

I have'nt had my hands on most of those builds.
I tried most of those and you left out 20931.

Doesn't the OEMs and tweaks also have a lot to do with "Stability"?

I'm using 20931 with some Older OEMs from Calcu that have proven stable for me.
I've had a couple small issues but the speed of TF3d and the stability is the best I've had. (I've been cooking my own ROMS for months so can't comment of any ROMS from Chefs).

20931 added to list with one vote now.

Yes you are most definitely correct that the OEM split will affect the stability. Different kitchen creators split them out different ways, with different sources - and the variability here certainly affects both stability and performance. Ultimately, I'd like to find the "best" combination of OEM split-out and SYS for both stability and performance. I'm just trying to poll for opinions first on the SYS since I believe there should be fewer options there.

Thanks for reading and responding.

Thanks - When I create an XIP, I'm defaulting it to what I personally want for a pagepool size. But the readily available pagepool changer application works fine (except for the version 1E I did - no longer posted) - so you Sprint types can quickly change the pagepool to zero (dynamic) or to 24MB or 32MB. Also, I've done virtually identical XIPs for 20764 and 21109 (versions 3E and 2E in the XIP thread respectively). I may do another one if there is a particular SYS winner other than one of those two - my plan would be to take the same approach as I've done so-far: Recover as much memory as possible, leave encryption in (but defaulted to off), properly implement disk and file caching, and set (probably) a 10MB default pagepool.

If you have had any issues with either the fixed version 2E or 3E XIP and changing the pagepool, please post a question in the XIP thread and I'll respond there.

Re: Best / most stable / fastest / most preferred SYS version

I always build off of whatever the stock is....

Why? While some newer sys's offer new functionalities, it's not what SYS you use in a rom, it's what else you put in a rom that will make it sluggish/freeze/give you problems. And I know how to take out the sprint cr_ap that slows it down.

And by what else, I mean OEM's and registry tweaks. And by using the stock rom, I don't lose any functionality with the programs that the carrier provided.

So I vote for stock whatever that is. :thumbleft: I can make it run just as fast as any other, and it's been tested by my carrier for months to work properly on my phone...Try my roms...Very nice!

20765, 20761 and 20759 are very good builds.

20769 and 20764 are both junk, just how i feel, other like them, not me though.

21139 was very fast

21159 is very fast.

20959 was a good build, never released public though

But to be safe Stick with a 207XX build, you will be much safer, and you know what is there, because it is all official builds.

Well from my experaince i found the illegal build 21014 to be the best on performance, but 20954 was a very good build, and sys, i had no problems with it at all, pretty stable and fast.

The Diamond, probably because of the kitchen, had the SYSs and OEMs "archived" on the FTP.
Is there any place like that for the Touch Pro?
I would like to try a 20764, That is the rumored Sprint update SYS(?), but haven't found it.

scrosler has released a kitchen for CDMA Touch Pro based on 20764. Go to http://www.scottcrosler.com. His OEM split is good as well - I've been using his kitchen and OEM, with some of my own mods for performance, with no issues.

Agree on 21014. Also, I'm using 21015 now and really like that one too. I should be releasing a kitchen in a few days for it (time permitting)

I have been using 21014 since the day after it hit. The performance is unlike anything I've ever experienced on Windows Mobile (I have a Touch Pro). Rotation speed measured against the stock Sprint TP ROM is consistently 2x+ as fast...

On a side note, the only problem I've noticed is that when I do a flick scroll on a mailbox, and then tap the screen to stop the scroll, it acts as if I did a sideways flick and advances to the next mailbox. This only happens in the mail app...anyone experience it or know a fix?

5.2.21014 Build 21014.1.6.0 !!!!

I've bounced around some of the available roms, except Dream ROM's (no particular reason)..... and so far the most responsive and fastest is the Juicy 4.7 rom.... but thats no longer available so I don't use it anymore.

This may not be the best place to ask this, but I want to cook my own ROMs but I have no idea where to find the raw stock versions of these roms. Where do I find them at? If I have the SYS folder for say build 21015 do I need a matching XIP?

Search the forum for "stock rom" - there is a thread for that for CDMA Touch Pro - perhaps not for every phone.

In general it is advisable but not required to have the same sys file and XIP. It seems that all 21109 and earlier XIP will work with any 21109 and earlier SYS. I have not tried 21014 or 21015. I have confirmed that 20764 and 21109 XIP will NOT work with SYS 21139 or 21142 (both WM6.5). So I think as long as both are WM6.1 or WM6.5 you should be OK.

BTW - where did you get the 21015 SYS?

OP updated. I've played with 21015 now and like what I've seen. As fast as 20764 (20954 was slower) and with a few new features. Slightly worse on memory.

OK - few days of solid use under the belt now on 21015 and this is where I'm staying for a while. Good speed, no bugs / stability issues, etc. No more flashing for me (anyone heard / said that before...?)

----1 20757/20954

----1 21139/21143 (WM6.5 - known bugs with camera, for example on CDMA Touch Pro and current OEMs)
----1 21159 (WM6.5)

EDIT 17-Feb - After running with 21015 for a day now, I have to say it seems as fast as 20764. I tried 20954 for a bit but that seemed slower. All three were stable and free of issues. 20764 has a slightly smaller memory footprint. 21015 has a bigger footprint but also some key newer features. So for now, I've changed my 20764 vote to 21015.

I'll cast the first vote by saying I prefer 20757/20764, ripped from the most recent Diamond WWE ROM. I've been running for days now with heavy use and not even a soft reset. But it is an old IE5 version. Reasonably fast though maybe not as fast as 21109.

FWIW, the stock Verizon ROM for TP ships with 19958/19972.

Here is a raw 21015 xip, in case no one has it. It still needs to be ported over. but it will be a start for a lot of people.

The XIP works great on 21018 SYS. But here is the XIP for everyone. Just port it over to your device and be happy.

Re: Best / most stable / fastest / most preferred SYS version

I built a ROM with 21015 lastnight from the "hype".
So far it seems stable but no where as responsive, especially TF3d, as 20931.

My Votes staying the same for now.

For giggles I'm gonna try 21159 then 20764 before I go back to 20931.

Re: Best / most stable / fastest / most preferred SYS version

20765 for now...

21018 is apparently quite good too

21015 is just a patched 21014, which was pretty fast itself

Re: Best / most stable / fastest / most preferred SYS version

Yeah 21018 Is good. 21015, I have a actual 21015, Every DSM is matching in that build. XIP is matching. And file size is larger then 21014, this is when doing a byte-to-byte comparison.

Playing with everything. Love the startup speed of 21018

OP updated with Conflipper's vote for 21018. I haven't tried that one. If you post a link to the SYS, I'll give it a whirl. Do you have a matching 21018 MSXIPKernel?

Con - even better, if you have any comparison points between 21018 vs. 21015 that would be useful info.

MSXIPKernel 5.2.21018 AKU 1600 (but it's missing mencfilt.dll and cachefilt.dll - I need both of those)

If you can ask your source for a version which includes the two missing files, I'll be happy to mud wrestle it into the smaller memory space XIP I've been working with and copy over the boot.rgu enhancements to enable better caching.

At least one version of 21018 SYS floating around out there has a bad .NET load. Check your NETCF or NETCF3.5 folder - if it has 72 files, 6 modules and 6.68 MB it's the bad version. If it has 63 files and 6 modules and 6.26 MB (or something different than the above bad one) it's probably OK.

Symptom others and I noticed is that you cannot open any dialog windows in Pocket Outlook. Can't read or compose an e-mail or SMS.
