Question about custom Roms

(Mods please move this to TP, or TP Upgrades; was posting tired again and didnt realize I was in PPC Software; sorry and thank you)

(I know this most likely belongs under "TP Upgrades; however it seems that forums is dedicated for post containing actual upgrading files.. i merely have a question)

I have been looking over all the guides on how to unlock and flash ones TP; but all of the big huge WARNING signs are kinda scaring me away.

The last thing I would like to do is brick my phone (I assume the same goes for everyone)

So my question is, is flashing ones phone really as risky as they claim it to be; meaning.. if I follow all of the steps and guides will I still be at risk of bricking my phone?

It seems everyone is doing it, and seeing great results.

Also, is it as simple as upgrading your phone using an official installer, or is there more registry work/ coding behind it?

Re: Question about custom Roms

if you follow all of the guides and steps to the letter, it greatly reduces the risk of bricking. there is always a chance of bricking though, you just have to take the plunge when youre ready.

i was extremely scared to do it myself, especially since i spent so much on this phone, until i said i gotta try it one day and after reading the unlocker thread, my tp was unlocked within 10 min with zero issues.

just follow here and good luck!!!

Re: Question about custom Roms

to be honest bricking a phone isn't that common if you follow the instructions, I've flashed at least a hundred times and have yet to brick my phone. Now as stated there's always a risk of course, but hundreds (probably thousands) of us do it all the time with 0 problems.

Re: Question about custom Roms

I tried the mighty mike rom, and now would like to check out another one.

Can I load the new rom over the mighty mike rom using the RUU folder like I did before...

or do I have to start over fresh, re-unlock and install the new rom?

Re: Question about custom Roms

Honestly the only time you have a really any signifigant chance of bricking your phone is when your upgrading your Radio otherwise its just as simple as following the steps. I have been flashing since I had a Mogul and when i was really heavy in to development I flashed many may times a day and have yet to brick a device.

once unlocked you are unlocked till you relock sometimes official ROMs relock it but Im fairly sure the current bootloader wont be over written by any current official ROMs

Re: Question about custom Roms

Im in the same boat about being nervous to flash a custom rom. 3 years with pocket pcs, and the only one i ever did was sprints official rom to enable revA and gps on our moguls. : )
Heres my question. If i unlocked my TP and flashed a custom rom, is there any chance i could possibly go back to my current stock rom and resore to my current state? I think id take the jump into flashing if i knew i could always go back to a previous setup. Maybe i should just go practice on my spare mogul

Once you unlock it and put on a custom rom you can re-flash your phone with the offical ROM from your carrier (Sprint) and re-lock the phone.
