PIC 20 - Battery Drain in EVDO Mode
PIC 21 - Current draw

Test Completed Both WiFi and EVDO shown in Post #695

Awesome Bob, great work!

But am i reading that right?
Was it really almost twice the current, with the same battery drain?

That's crazy!

No, you haven't gone crazy, but you're not really reading it right. Both scales have 600 ma Max...in # 21, the lower current on the far right was after I shut it down, ....it just took me a little longer before I took the pic. Both operational currents were in the 500ma range....It's just that the WIFI one did not have those drastic swings - it was in a more consistent range. I'm not sure why #21 had those large spikes going downward.. The conditions were the same.

Rodger that, thank you.

So basically, we can say WiFi or Data Connection... both are gonna drain the battery at about the same rate?

Bob - first off, thank you for taking the time to do the test for me! So... correct me if I'm not interpeting this right. It looks to me like the battery life is roughly the same whether you are streamning over wifi or evdo are roughly the same. Interesting. I know on my last phone (samsung i760), wifi gave longer run time consistenly, over evdo when I was streaming music. Ah well... good to know it doesnt really matter which I use.

Yes, that's true. I noticed similar results when I tested the 3 different popular radios. No difference.

My reasoning is that all these items are SOFTWARE related. The main Qualcomm 7500 chip just uses these different items to process the information. The processing chip doesn't really care where it gets it's input...it just processes the info that it receives. My guess for the WiFi/EVDO is that those items just tell the radio how to get the info...In either case, you are not turning on another piece of hardware...The phone is always active....so it's just dialing #777. The wifi connection still has to get in thru the antenna and probably passes thru the radio that sorts it all out. I tried putting the phone in the "airplane" mode to turn it off, but it also turned off the WiFi connection, so it couldn't be tested in that fashion.

Don't know how correct I am in those assumptions, but after a couple of beers, they sound reasonable.

That's why I think alot of this battery improvement with the different radios and connections is "imaginary". Every test I have run gives nearly the same results IF THE CONDITIONS ARE KEPT CONSTANT.

If you can show me thru practical usage something different, let me know. But again, a lot depends on how it's used.

Why don't you try that...just turn it on, let the music play till the battery gives a low battery warning and measure the amount of time. Do that for each condition and let me know what your results were (I hope that they are the same as mine) and to speed up the process so it happens in only a couple of hours....keep the brightness at max for both tests....otherwise it could take a long time to run down the battery.

Bob
