forgive this question from a person without much software knowledge but.......

1. How often do you upgrade to a new version?
2. Do you always have to go back to Shipped version first before upgrade?
3. What actually changes with each version? ex: programs or just better running?

1. Depends on timing, new sys updates, etc. Mystery will push out updates regularly though.
2. Yes you should since it's a guarantee of success post flash. Not required though but if you run into problems that others are not reporting like random hard resets when soft reseting, tf errors, pronounced lockup or freezing, etc. then it's probably to do with not flashing the shipped rom first.
3. it depends, sometimes an version is updated to fix a bug, most of the time it's to update to another sys. like 21812 to 21816 for example. also, updates to programs like youtube, googlemaps, livesearch, etc that make it worth updating.

To piggy back on riley5's great explanation, the sys are updates to the OS which in this case is windows mobile 6.5.

i say that to say this, you dont have to keep updating every other day if you dont want too, most of us do it to help mystery recognize bugs and glitches, that way he can make another release that is perfect for his followers... so if you have a pretty stable one, i would wait till he updates with new sys or complete overhauls unless you like playing with your phone as much as we do

good question, did a little searching on Google and found an app called keyswop. Also for people that want to change out the soft keys in tf3d, here is a post I found. It appears that keyswop will not work for tf3d but might work for titanium. I am going to try it today.
