i reloaded wdcm and still the phone is a problem could it be broken and when i update profile it says no update

I don't think it's my device, but I'll ask here anyway.
I just got my computer back and have a fresh WinXP MCE installed. I downloaded and installed A/S and I keep getting an error that the USB device isn't recognized. It's charging, and the phone will sync with my laptop, but none of the normal changes seem to get it recognized. Any ideas? On a whim, I tried using a different USB port. It connected immediately. Yay.
