First off, Welcome. Flashing is just a term for installing/Upgrading.

If you want to upgrade you phone from its crappy stock state, your going to have to first, (Unlock your phone). Once that is done, you can (FLASH) custom roms to your device

Think of it, as putting a Jet Engine on a bike. Most of the phone's systems will be enhanced by most custom roms.

OTHER TERMS;
Kitchen: A complilation of programs that deconstruct, allow customization, and reconstruct a ROM.
ROM: Technically Read Only Memory, this is essentially the software on your phone that can be customized through a Kitchen and then Flashed onto your phone.
Cooking: The process of using a Kitchen to customize a ROM.
Flashing: The process of loading a ROM onto your phone via the RUU.
RUU: ROM Upgrade Utility, used to Flash a ROM onto your phone.
NBH: A file type (.nbh). This is a ROM.
Unlocking: The process of making your phone Flashable by custom ROMs.
Relocking: The process of going from an Unlocked state a Locked state.

Read here for more info and how to. If you have question or concerns, always ask first, before you do anything

Re: Flashing a rom from the 4 gig storage

Flashing is a term used to update firmware. firmware is the middle ground between read only memory that is pre written, and dynamic memory that changes constantly. this allows updates (like to the operating system) to be possible, while keeping the average novice from turning their phone into a brick (non functional paperweight).

Now on this site we have lots of clever people who have been able to create custom versions of windows mobile with different things like pre-loaded programs, drivers, interfaces, and sometimes even newer releases of windows mobile like how everyone was on windows 6.1 here before an official release.

Re: Flashing a rom from the 4 gig storage

I am new to flashing roms. I plan on flashing my first rom using the internal storage method, but have a few questions. I want to make sure I am going to be doing this correctly. First I unlock the phone. Second I download the rom and install the .nbh file into internal storage root directory then change the file name leaving off the .nbh at the end as this will be automatically added. Third, restart the phone. And hopefully all goes well. My other question on this issue is does the original rom remain on the phone, and if I do not like the new rom how do I go back to the factory rom. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

yes, first you unlock your phone.

then you transfer the file to your internal storage. if you rename the file to DIAMIMG.nbh from the computer make sure you CAN see the .nbh but if you rename it from your phone the mobile file explorer doesn't show extensions so you should only see DIAMIMG (or RUU_SIGNED before you rename it)

after that you have to do that hold backspace volume down and power while pressing soft reset to restart your phone. if your phone stars up normally you did something wrong (but it wont hurt anything so just try again)

if you want to go back to stock you can easily find the stock rom in the stickies here. Just redownload it and do the same method.

Re: Flashing a rom from the 4 gig storage

maybe this is a stupid question, but does the stock rom get overwritten when flashing new rom or do I need to delete stock rom first.
