Upgrading Phone with Sprint SERO

A friend tried to upgrade her rumor to a Pre and she is eligible for an upgrade starting today. The guy at Sprint said she should have got a letter stating the SERO plan was no longer and in order to upgrade she must get a new plan.

What options does she have keeping the SERO plan but also getting a Pre?
