These days GSM and CDMA are about the same in what they can offer. The biggest advantage of GSM is the ablility to pop in a new SIM card when you travel but in terms of performance, they are virtually the same.

We aren't that far behind the world by any means. The fact that we have so much copper and fiber buried to supply our broadband makes us different than countries without that existing infrastructure that leap straight to wireless for data.
