Re: Realistic expectations management for Android on Touch Pro 2?
Hey guys. Pretty much since sound (ringtones) became fixed, I have been using Android full time as my OS. I just can't stand Windows. I find the current state of Android to be fully usable but there are features I sometimes miss, in order from most desired to least.
1. CAMERA - So any times I'll be out having a good time and think "I should grab a picture of this!", but quickly become disappointed when I realize I would have to take the time to boot back into Windows to do so. 2. IMPROVED BATTERY LIFE - Battery is pretty good as is, but I am frequently finding my phone dead by the end of the day (I charge it overnight). A more accurate battery meter would be nice too. 3. MMS - I'm curious why this is such a low priority for the developers? I don't personally use it a lot, but I have occasionally had people try to send me them, and then three days later when they ask me about it, I feel like a jerk for "ignoring it" since I don't even get a notification on it. Though it helps that I can visit pictures.sprintpcs.com to view any. 4. IMPROVED 3D - Not a huge deal, but I recently picked up the Angry Birds game and the framerate is bad and lots of textures are missing. 5. HEADPHONE JACK - Would be nice if I could seemless use a pair of headphones for Pandora. |

Re: Realistic expectations management for Android on Touch Pro 2?
i will throw my opinion in here i guess. i work outside as a landscaper and irrigation repair and use my headphones to both listen to music and make phone calls without touching my phone with dirty, greasy, or muddy hands, so headphone jack would be first on my wish list.
my job also requires me to take a lot of before/after pictures and sometimes pictures to identify plants/trees/flowers, so camera would definitely be next. MMS is not incredibly important to me cuz i can always just email the picures and although power management could still stand to be improved, i would venture to say that the tp2 was never famous for its awesome battery life in the first place and i just got in the habit of carrying a few spare batteries with me. i am due an upgrade, but in carrying a smartphone since the treo 180 days, i think that the tp2 has been by far the best phone overall i have ever used and if i can get a little more life and functionality out of it, why give up a good thing. i am amazed and incredibly impressed with the work that the devs have done getting android to work to the level of functionality that they have, and find myself using it at least half the time, and would probably switch over almost completely once these few issues are addressed, if they ever do get addressed. if not, i think what we already have is damn sweet enough to give out tp2s some awesome varieties of flavor.

The deveolpment on this port in the last few months has been nothing short of amazing. Power management is the only thing keeping me from using this as a daily OS. However, when I'm near power, I have Android running. |

Re: Realistic expectations management for Android on Touch Pro 2?
Well put, Kenaf, especially on the "ignored" inbound MMS. And I've rebooted into WM for a picture or two of the kids now and again.
But I must say, warts and all, what we have now is far better than WinMob. No way I could switch back at this point. Here's a related question -- how long will folks wait for the remaining issues to be fixed? We're all one upgrade away from having a native Android phone, and I'd guess that a lot of us are already over a year having a TP2. But the TP2 keyboard has spoiled me, and there's no QWERTY phone on Verizon that comes close. The Ally is uninspired at best, and I hate the Droid/D2 keyboard. I'm very grateful that the devs have given me the ability to have an Android phone having a keyboard which is far superior to anything else that I can get from my carrier. The only promising QWERTY slider on the horizon (for VZW) is the HTC Merge. But it's only a 4-row! |

Re: Realistic expectations management for Android on Touch Pro 2?
For me some progress on camera functionality would be the next thing on my personal wishlist... i keep wanting to have the option of using barcode scanners and some of the ARGs that depend on the camera.
Power has made significant strides in just the last month or 2 to a point where I'm pleased and will take any further improvement as bonus. Don't use BT or MMS much so I can do without both...

Re: Realistic expectations management for Android on Touch Pro 2?
For me the one and only thing holding me back is battery life, I cant get more than like 6 hours out of it with a normal use (phone call or 2, few texts, and a little browsing) If we had battery life that could get me through the day I would definitely give up mms camera and even bluetooth as these seem like more of a "bells and whistles" type thing and battery is more of a core functionality to me
I cant believe how far this has come though and once battery is fixed I will be donating, keep it up guys and thank you again! Last edited by lemeiux1; 10-26-2010 at 04:00 PM. |

Re: Realistic expectations management for Android on Touch Pro 2?
Yeah, I try to run in Andro as long as I can during the day... once I get a low battery warning, I boot into WM till I can get close to a charger again. It's nothing more than a backup generator for my phone now. Never did I think WM would become the SECONDARY OS on my device!

Re: Realistic expectations management for Android on Touch Pro 2?
Funny, the only things that really don't work are the things we want. My top priority would be camera. Having 3 kids doing something cute while i am trying to reboot makes it difficult. I have donated in the past and if camera doesnt get fixed i will still be donating in the future. Very rare do i need to send or receive a mms but it would be nice. Thanks to all that worked on this project!
