headset for phone use?

Is it possible to get the headset working for calls (as opposed to listening to media)? The port status page suggests it is, but I have had no luck. I have tried with both a 3.5mm headset and a usb headset. The rest of my android build seems to function within the limits of the current builds: phone (without headset), gps, data, etc.

As an aside, I found this thread, but it seems to address media playback rather than telephonic use.

Any thoughts on whether I'm doing something wrong or whether it's possible would be greatly appreciated.
