Android, it's alive!.. (2.0.1) - Updated 12/24

New build (12/24) here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=W7RHOIIF

What's new:
4th version of the kernel. Should allow for data (Might be limited to GSM phones)
vicbush's zImage, which should enable the phone's hardware buttons
Rotation support (Enabled/disabled by taking out and putting back the stylus)
Slightly better calibration, though still slightly off

Re: Android, it's alive!..

Wow. Does this indicate that eventually we will have a fully functioning Android install for the TP2? Could one conceivably install it at that point and use their TP2 on Sprint with Android?

If it was developed that far, yes. You can do it right now with the Vogue/Touch

If you had android on the tp2 could you have android apps? That would be the only reason i would have android.

It's Android 1.6 running in a WVGA resolution. It looks just like every other plain Android build does

Re: Android, it's alive!..

They've been working on that for a while. I sure can't wait till they get it fully functioning. I'm not touching it till then though. I can't wait for the day when we have Android options in the ROM upgrade forum!

Yeah, that's why I asked because I don't know that Android looks like really, guess I'll Google it

As I said above, it's a plain Android build. AOSP

Re: Android, it's alive!..

This is great news. If they get Android development on the TP2 to the same level as Vogue that would make for a perfect phone as it would have the best of both worlds with an amazing screen and keyboard. I'm dissapointed to see that HTC doesn't have many upcoming models with keyboards (certainly nothing at the same level as TP2).

elephant007 12-20-2009 08:32 PM

Re: Android, it's alive!..

I just ran it on my phone, it's kind of trippy because of the mirrored touch, you want to say SKIP and your have to press the button on the opposite side, even when there isn't a button available... I tried to sign in, keyboard didn't work though (on screen keyboard) nor the hardware keyboard, still cool that it boots though!

looks like the bounty thread over at xda really caught someones attention :)

this is just the kind of news i was waiting for to make my day 1000000x better.

thanks for the credit :)
There is also a 2.1 version that is booting. Still has all the issues.

I'm interested to see how this advances. The tp2 keyboard with android is enough for me to do a backflip... No not really, but I would be excited. I would love to see some screen shots if anyone has them.

You mean 2.0.1? I saw that. I'm too lazy to put together a build right now :D

I am very excited about this! It would be terrific to be able to try out Android once it gets working with some stability.

Re: Android, it's alive!..

although exciting, i'll probably be on another device by the time it's usable :(
plus cdma users are left in the dark aren't they? from my understanding the tp1 android boot still doesn't work nearly as good as it does for gsm tp1.

Re: Android, it's alive!..

ok here is android 2.01 bootable for touch pro 2
this works on my sprint touch pro 2
http://www.zachzampetti.com/android/androidTP2.zip

just unzip everything to your sd card, it needs to be formatted fat32
run haret.exe and wait
the touch screen is reversed.

What works and what doesn't with this version?

it boots, and you can play with the interface a bit, the touch screen is reversed so its a pain to use. its cool to see it booting but besides that i wouldn't use this yet

but the cdma vouge was the first to get android ported, and can be fully flashed so who knows how far this will get.

The Android progress on the Vogue is amazing. I was about to buy dzo a Touch Pro2 if the progress on the Topaz/Rhodium didn't pick up, haha

Re: Android, it's alive!.. (1.6/2.0.1)

Wonder what this would mean for those of us on SERO accounts. I know that Sprint doesn't allow you to activate an Android phone on SERO, but if you take an already activated TP2 and install Android on it, any chance they'll see that and cause you trouble?

jayare29 12-21-2009 04:23 PM

Re: Android, it's alive!.. (1.6/2.0.1)

i cant wait for the day when phones are as customizable as pcs. ie you get to choose operating system independantlywithout needing consent of the cell carriers. why it is not that way yet is beyond me, i paid alot of money for my phone and i still need there software or to risk bricking it.

I highly doubt it. The restrictions are on specific phone models, it just so happens that all the android phones are on that list. I doubt Sprint would go to the trouble of finding out if you are running android for the sole purposes of pissing you off. :geek:

I agree, certain phones are SERO blacklisted based on blocked ESN numbers. They wouldn't have the first clue that you were running Android, nor do I think they'd care.

This is great news for SERO TP2 owners who would like to run Android. Let's hope the progress is brisk and we have a usable version soon.

it would be nice once it fully works.. to be able to flash to Android and back to WM would be cool

Boy, for a proof-of-concept it's right on the spot. Although yes so far it's good for looking at, but it really gives everybody hope that down the road, we will have Android running out it.

I'll be looking forward to the full native Android support one day.

I installed this build on my TP2 and it was pretty cool. It is a work in progress for sure but once it is fully functional it is going to be sweet. I flashed it and flashed it back to WM and my phone works fine. Just make sure that when you flash back you flash to factory first then go to any ROM you want. Great job and cant wait to see whats next with this one.

Uh, what are you talking about? This isn't a flashable ROM, you run it via HaRET

Wow! This is great news! So after all us SERO users might be running android soon and means we don't have to give up our SERO plans for a android device! Hope his becomes 100% working. ;]

Just curious. What are the main differences between Android and say Windows Mobile 6.5?
