Mobile Spy does work but a cheap way is to get Backup to Gmail and then hide the app on the phone.
Make sure to have the Gmail password.
You can then view calls, text, email and pictures sent from there.
It is what I do along with Google latitude.

Is the tracker I used recently. It is advertised as a service to help people locate their lost or stolen phones. Be it just misplaced in your own house or picked up by someone else. But you can use any of the features. The best part of this app is that is absolutely 100% Free. I haven't even seen any advertisements. and it doesn't slow the persons phone down. I was able to pinpoint their exact GPS location and pull up to them in my car. Right before they were about to go off and get high again. He thanked me later...

Some of the things it can do are:

*Last 50 text messages sent or recieved
*Call log
*Remotely browse files on the phone from any web browser
*Take a picture with either front or rear camera
*Turn mic audio on and record up to two minutes and retrieve that audio file from any web browser
*GPS location + turn gps on if its off.Regular gps checkins at certain time periods
*TTS text 2 speech... You send the phone a message and the phone will speak your message outloud at full volume, regardless if it is set to silent or vibrate.
*Pop up text message on display
*Lock the phone remotely
*Wipe the phone remotely.
*Wipe the sd card
*Turn Data On/Off
*Turn Bluetooth On/Off
*Turn GPS On/Off
*Contol the phone via hidden text messages from another phone.
*Hang up the phone.
*Have the phone make a phone call. (Have the phone call your phone and you should be able to pick up and listen to sound in the room for the duration of the phone call until they hang it up.
*Sound the Alarm for different periods of time. Might be good if they are hiding somewhere in a house or outside.
*Pre installation they claim is not required. You just have to have the google account username and password (gmail address) for their phone. and you can push it from the google play store.
