SMS Ureadcount is bout on the best Gmail widgets. Try Web Widgets. Them add add you gmail account., Its not great, but not bad

The Dev for LPro says it can not be done. The Moto Launcher is required for them to work.
There are a few good Moto Widgets but you really can find better replacements in the Market.
